    Bandwidth confusion

    Hello

My dedicated server provider gives me access to an orion network performance monitor via its site so that I can monitor the bandwidth usage of my server. But there is some discrepancy in the figures that I cannot understand. Can someone here shed some light?

    Data in average bps:

    RECEIVED: 10888203.95
    TRANSMITTED: 9474946.56

This works out to around (10888203.95+9474946.56)*60*60*24)/8/1000/1000/1000=220Gigabytes

    Data in bytes:

    RECEIVED: 67054157927
    TRANSMITTED: 57561923487

And this works out to around (67054157927+57561923487)/1,000,000,000=125GB

I don't understand why there is such a massive difference ?

Just to confirm, have you been monitoring for precisely 24 hours? Only then will your average * time value match precisely.

I am not sure but it may be your received data from your dedicated server.

Using your math, cocodude is correct. You have a time element in your first equation, but none in your second.

No, Sorry I wasn't clearer. I just presented a single day's stats as an example. I have like 2 months of stats and they are all similar. For example: by bytes I have used 2 TB in the last month but by bps I have used 3.4TB

Any idea whats going on? I should add that I also have vnstat installed on my server and its stats are very close to the bps figures give by orion NPM.

In which case, I am also thoroughly confused as I think your maths is correct! Clutching at straws, I can only think that possibly one measurement is looking at the IP level and the other at the interface (kind of ARP) level, or maybe that the average bps is actually the 95th percentile measurement.

I do agree that your measurements don't really make sense, so sorry I can't be any further help!
