2 x Xeon 5430 VS 2 x Xeon 5550
Hello everybody,
We are debating between these two processors 2 x Xeon 5430 VS 2 x Xeon 5550 and we can find very little information to compare them. Some posts say these have nearly the same performance. We are looking to do a buydown and the 5550 will be $1000 more. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Do you think that the 5500 will be more upgradable and will "hold" longer?
This article is about "FB-DIMM development stops, Registered ECC DDR3
is the way forward"

Whoever told you that 54xx has almost the same performance as 55xx is insane. 55xx's have proven to have over 50% performance gains on most workloads compared with the last generation (54xx's).

5550? Why do you need such an expensive processor? You could buy two 5520 for the price of one, and just split your load across two servers.
The Nehalem architecture will be faster, since it offers HT as well, which gives you 4 more threads, so if your application can make use of them it will see a big speed improvement.

Thanks for your reply. Anybody else has some input before we fork out an extra G?

The 5500 series is much faster than the 5400 series processors. As mentioned above, you're better off getting 4 5520 procs than 2 5550s.

Do you mean a server with 4 processors, or 2 servers? I don't need 2 servers, we need just one that will last for a long time. Whats the point in buying two servers, then there are many other double costs........

I am glad I am not the only one who came in this thread thinking that!
The 5500's use DDR3, compared to the 5430's, which use DDR2...big difference there. Also, the price difference is about 2.5x higher for 5550, and the performance is about 50% better/faster.

What you should probably ask yourself, is if you are actually going to use the Dual 5430s. Those are still incredibly fast processors, and there are very few applications that will max out that pair of CPUs. In the general hosting world, you will almost never max out the CPUs.

We are doing a buydown. So it will be a large investment now for low monthly fee. So the whole idea is to get a server that we can use for as many years as we can. Over 3 years, the $1000 difference will translate to $28 extra a month. Do you still think we should go with the 5430?

I would do a 5520 as others have said. a 5550 is going to cost dramatically more. If you're even considering a 54xx, then rest assured the 5520 will be a lot faster, and should cost a similar amount. If you need a few extra percent on top of that you could do the 5550, but as you said, you can expect to pay another $1000 for it. Not really worth it in my opinion.

What are you talking about? Everybody is saying that it will be 50% faster.... What the others said is to get two separated servers instead of one for the same price, but we don't need two servers!

Everybody is saying that 55xx will be 50%+ faster than 54xx. A 5550 will not be 50%+ faster than a 5520.

Exactly. You can get the 5520 a lot cheaper than the 5550 you're considering, while having similar performance. The 5520 is also a much better option than the 54xx you're considering as it will be dramatically faster and similar in price.

Thanks guys, you are really helping us to make the right decision and save money.
How much does the 5520 cost over 5430? Whats the price difference between these two at the moment if you buy the chip from a wholesaler, like a hosting company would?
Thanks
