Yeah it's possible but I'm not sure how much resources you would need. I run game servers a home on a private server I built. I can run about 4 gameservers at a time with ease, without having to worry about overloading the CPU or ram. When you have people joining the server, cpu and ram load goes up. So you would have to check with your host before doing anything, the last thing you want is for your host to shut you down for killing the CPU or RAM (if burst). Honestly you should get a dedicated server for this, much safer for you and you'll have far less worries about getting shut down because a 100% of the resources are yours.

It is never recommended to run a gameserver on a VPS. I do not know your provider, the virtualization software they use or their overselling policy. Starting a game servers host is not recommended at all.

That depends on how many gameservers/slots you plan to run on it..

Depends on how many connections the server gets and how much load the game(s) can use at it's peak.
My home game server has only 2gb ram, I run cs, css, l4d, and a tf2 server - I can support maybe 30-40 people on at the same time but I'm limited by my upload speed. You can start small and see how the server does, if you jump to 8gb ram and you find out you're using only 2gb, then it's just a waste of money.
There should be VPS providers that allow game servers to run so you can start out with that, test things out to see how much resources you may need and then decide on a dedicated server from there. Doubt many VPS providers will allow you to sell massive amounts of Game servers on their node but you would have to ask individual companies.

Ok! Thanks for the answers guys. I'll start with a VPS, later, if a need, get a dedicated.

All Xen providers should be fine for game servers, as long as you aren't going (too far) into swap.

I agree that you should start smaller. I have an old Win2003 box at home that I run several game servers on as well. Nothing spectacular, P4 1.4 (478 single core) and 1GB ram.
I have CSS, DODS, COD5, GMOD, and TF2 servers running. These are all private, but we have had ~25 or so people on at once without any real problems. I also have 25/15 FIOS at home, so the upstream bandwidth helps.

I run a Fedora Linux Server at home. It's awesome. Dual core AMD with 2gb RAM, almost 3 years since I built it. I have an old P4 but I just gave it to my little sis.
I wish I had Fios, my upload speed is only around 1mbps (less than that) otherwise I would be able to run a few more servers.
