Which of these 3 Xeon's are the best?
Which of these 3 Xeon Processors are the best?
Intel Xeon E5410 Harpertown 2.33 GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz FSB, Quad-Core
http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.p...10+%40+2.33GHz
Intel Xeon E5420 Harpertown 2.5GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz FSB Quad-Core
http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.p...20+%40+2.50GHz
Intel Xeon E5430 Harpertown 2.66GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz FSB Quad-Core
http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.p...30+%40+2.66GHz
To summarize the CPU Scores:
E5410 - 6869
E5420 - 7807
E5430 - 7998
I'm open to other suggestions, but my budget per processor is low (under $500) and these 3 are under $570.
The server would be running 2 of these. I currently have a server with 2 Dual Core Intel Xeon 5050 3Ghz 4MB Cache 667Mhz FSB Dual-Core and im using it for game server hosting.

Pricing on Newegg.com
E5410 - $269.99
E5420 - $349.99
E5430 - $494.99
E5440 - $714.99
Based on the benchmarks, the best bang for your buck would be the E5420. As the E5420's have 97.6% of the performance the E5430's according those benchmark numbers. Since they are the same class of CPU, it's likely going to scale accordingly across any application the same way. If you are getting two, that's about $700 for the pair. You would save $300 by not getting the next step up. For which you are not getting much of a bump in performance anyway.
Although, is this a server that you are just upgrading the CPU's on? Or are you building from scratch? If so, why not go with the Nehalem Xeons? As a comparison, it's only about $35 dollars more per CPU to go with the E5520 Nehalem Xeons. Comparatively, the E5420's only have about 85.6% of the performance compared to the E5520's for just $70 more for the pair. So if you are starting from scratch, I'd go with the Nehalems. If not, then stick with the E5420'sLast edited by MikeTrike; 12-23-2009 at 11:15 AM.

E5420 indeed, and they have been for some time. E55XX series gives a considerable performance boost, but I don't think your chipset can handle those.

E5420 is best if you're searching not just for speed but for affordable price too
