Begineer looking for a host
I am planning on create a website to host my software. Currently my software receives 3000-4000 downloads per day on another website. The software is only 1 MB. The site will host some images, and forums. The site is not too complex
This is my first attempt at creating and hosting a website. How much bandwidth would I need per month? And what are some good reliable hosts? I am not looking to spend too much, but I will try to compensate with ads.
Thanks

One thing you should be aware of is the amount of bandwidth you will be using each day which would be anywhere from 3000 MB to 4000 MB which also does not include your traffic. Those numbers turn into 87GB to 117GB Bandwidth per month. With those numbers I would recommend that you stay away from any host the oversells (overcrowds servers, offers unlimited space & bandwidth) as your software gains popularity, your bandwidth needs will increase. Some reliable hosts include LiquidWeb but they are pricey for Shared Hosting but are very reliable.

3,000-4,000 downloads per day on a 1MB file, let's say 3,500 average per day. So you have 3.5GB average (from your software alone) per day. That would be about 100GB~ worth of bandwidth per month for the software alone. So something with about 150GB worth of bandwidth to start might be something to look into. If you want to plan for any sort of growth, you may consider a budget VPS so you can scale a bit.
On another note, you could probably do fine with shared. But I still recommend at least a budget VPS so you can scale if needed. A budget VPS with a control panel such as cPanel would do well also. Making it easy in the event you want to quickly migrate to another provider. For comparison, shared hosting for what you need would be anywhere from $10-$20/mo. You can get a decent budget VPS for $20/mo so you would do well to jump in if you can handle a VPS on your own. You would be looking at $40+/mo for a decent managed VPS.
Also while on the subject of VPS, the pricing I described would usually fall under OpenVZ VPS territory. If you preffered a VPS/VDS powered by Xen (i.e. a real Virtual Machine) then the cost will generally be higher.

If you are looking for a WebHosting company, I would personally go with HostGator. Check with their support to make sure your site and it's content is ok with their Terms of Service and you should be good. Their service is both excellent, reliable, and affordable. The 3 words that you may benefit from the most.

You would probably want to have a budget in the $12 to $25 range per month to get a quality provider that will reliably meet your needs. I would suggest discussing what you plan on doing with your hosting with a provider before signing up to make sure they have no issues with it as well.

I would probably recommend an entry level VPS just because your software is popular and as you promote it, those numbers will grow quite a bit so a VPS would be able to keep you up as you fluctuate. It would also help ease off growing pains in the future.
If you do go shared (and of course you can still manage to fit on shared hosting), be sure to do some research on the company first and possibly get some load numbers or something to see if they have their servers overcrowded or what have you prior to signing up.

Servers can still be overcrowded and still show low "load"... Just depends on what is on the server and what is being hosted to reflect those numbers.

If your new to hosting then you won't want a VPS. Using just a quality shared hosting provider would be enough. There are many about. Just stay away from the "unlimited" hosts and you'll be fine.
Also, don't put in for diskspace/bandwidth you don't need. You will be better of with a custom plan instead. One that you can upgrade/downgrade as you wish. 1GB - 2GB of diskspace and around 150GB of bandwidth should be enough to start with.

With your post I think you would be good with a small Managed VPS. For 3000 - 4000 downloads or people you will need about 3000 or 4000 MB Bandwidth just like a member has said before.

The only advise to here is that standard cheap shared hosting will not work for you. This means that you should consider using any kind of VPS, a dedicated server or cloud/cluster based hosting solution. keeping the expenses low is an objective which means not to consider a dedicated server.

if you cannot manage a vps i would recommend one of Host Gator's reseller plans. Its great money for the plans plus you can call on them anytime. I dont think you would need a vps because you do not seem to need root access. only a good plan to sustain your downloads etc
