Dedicated or VPS for Magento?
Hi guys... I'm running magento on my reseller hosting account. but its very very laggy, its not launch to the public, just installed it to explore the functions...
I've engaged a company to customize the magento to have multiple stores options, like many different stores (branded differently) sharing 1 database (connected to my main database). Is vps good enough for me? what kinda specs do u think its good enough 4? a headache...

It sounds like a VPS would suit you fine. Usually with a VPS it's the CPU and Ram access that is advantageous, especially for resource heavy ecommerce applications. If you're looking to run cPanel, I would recommend at least 512MB of Ram. The rest would depend on how much traffic you expect and how fast. It would be a bonus to find a host that can let you upgrade to a higher end VPS or dedicated server should you realize you need more power, but it makes little sense to go that route before you've even opened.

Semi dedicated is more just a marketing term for a VPS Node or a Reseller server with less accounts on it.
I've successfully ran Magento on a VPS with 1GB RAM, you can do it on less RAM but I'd suggest at least 512MB or more

Semi Dedicated hosting is the hosting in which a user gets a server which is shared with less no of users who has heavy usage than their normal usage.
VPS Hosting is the hosting service in which hard drives of single physical server are split into multiple virtual server all has its root access and also server management consoles.

it seems like semi dedicated = 1 can only host 1 domain + certain number of add ons.
but vps i can host several domains, each of them will have their own control panel.
Correct me if i'm wrong?!
any good host to recommend? should i pick up managed or unmanaged solution?
Thanks!

"Semi dedicated" can mean various things depending on the provider, it's best to clarify with them exactly what this means.
Anyway Magento, while a great package, is quite demanding.. particularly if you have a large product catalogue, numerous concurrent visitors, or both! I would recommend starting with 1GB of dedicated (not burst) RAM.. but that's just a general recommendation. Good luck

Semi-dedicated hosting is like shared hosting, except with significantly fewer accounts on each server, so that you are competing with less people for server resources like CPU and Ram. However just like shared hosting, you do not have WHM access, and thus cannot have more than one cPanel account. You will host multiple domains as add-on domains. The downside compared to a VPS is that you do not get full root access (which lets you install whatever you like), and you are still sharing resources (though with a far fewer number of people compared to shared hosting).
A VPS plan with cPanel+WHM will let you create as many cPanel accounts as you like, and host multiple domains with their own control panel. If you're new to a VPS, go for a managed solution, where the host takes care of everything and provides you with all the help and support you need, as well as monitoring and securing your server for you.

Actually an optimized shared or reseller hosting plan will be able to run Magento smoothly without slowness or lagging.
It may not be a good idea to go with some VPS with lower RAM (eg. 512MB RAM + cPanel) as the performance cannot match a proper shared hosting account.
We have quite some clients who migrated from VPSs with the above specs and they are amazed that shared hosting can actually outperform the VPS in every aspect.
