    hacked

    Hello,
My friends server has been hacked.
    It's colocated.

He still has root access to it.. but he does not know what the damage is.

In order to get this fixed / holes patched who could he get to do this?

    Companies you'd recommend please.

It's hard to give you ideas without knowing what's wrong with it.

    "Strange activity" is hardly specific

Maybe the script got exploited, not specifically the server. Definitely do a rootkit scan to make sure s/he doesn't have any, and restore from previous backups if you have any. I suggest you look at PSM(platinumservermanagement) as they might be able to help lock down the server, etc.

    Where is the server located?
Do they have hands-on techs avail?

    OK it's under control now.
A mutual friend who is a coder / sys admin etc has fixed it up.

Some old code apparently was the cause, but i am not really that tech savvy.

I'll recommend PSM to him in the future so it doesn't happen again.

A colocated machine needs an admin to patch/watch/fix, my advice to you and your friend is to provide your mutual friend with some incentive (scotch or belgium beers always works for me) to do some free parttime adminning of that box.
