When do you consider your website a popular website?

I know there's really no standard for this but I just want to know what other people think of or what's your personal benchmark.

Would a website getting 3,500+ uniques be considered popular?

You will get a different answer from everyone. I'm not sure what I would even consider popular... I mean I think of Google as popular.. its a name everyone knows no matter where in the world you are.

No I mean when do you think that you've successfully made your website popular.

Erm...for me I think 1 day 1000 visitors visit my website and every post will have at least 100 comments then quite popular already...

    1) When you search Google and your site is listed in the first page results.

    2) When your site is mentioned on CNN.com

    3,500 uniques a day? I'd say that's pretty popular.

well its relative on your topic. I mean you cant compare a site on cheese making to best buy but thats obvious.

Honestly, I would not limit it to 1 thing, or 10. Its popular when you think its popular. organic traffic, referrals, repeat users, are all signs, but not one really limits it.

    But it was said:
    1) When you search Google and your site is listed in the first page results.
If they are relevant keywords. I could probably get first place for "gdfgghfgrgpkpdjpdmdsf"
, or compare it to those SEO services that promise to get you on the front page...they find keywords that work to their favor of acheiving that, not the best.

    2) When your site is mentioned on CNN.com

Of course if I made a site on why people should buy my cow dung to be used in a health smoothie that is a fountin of youth. I might make it on cnn.com on an article about stupid rejuvenation techniques, heh....but I get your point

100,000 visitors per month is typically my "popular website" benchmark.

It's hard to say...I've had people mention my website to my friends and family without knowing that I ran it...that felt cool. But to be 'popular'...in what regard? Popular to the general population, a niche group, your friends?

I think you should visit buysellads.com and see how they deem certain websites as "ad worthy" and you would know if you site has reached that level as yet

I would say that was popular, if you have a high page rank then you know that you are popular

Thanks for the link. Where do they list their "ad worthy" criteria? I can't find on their web site, oddly enough. Please let me know how to find it, as I'm interested in reading.

There isnt an "ad worthy" section. Sry for the misconception. What I mean is that if you play around with the bar in the "buy ads" section you would see which websites are extremely popular and how much they charge for an ad. Actually, it is the management team who gives guidance to these website owners on how much they could or should based on impressions, rank etc. This should help you to decide how "popular" your site is based on websites which fit your unique portfolio.

eg: if you have 10,000 impressions per month. Adjust the bar for that and see what the search results display. The higher the price for an add= the more your site is worth

A "popular" site is a site that people use. Many people could visit your site and just leave.

Social interaction is a part of the internet and it should be part of your site.

"Popular" is such a relative term. I'd say a combination of a high search ranking and when the site pays for itself (via adverts, donations, etc)

If you wish to rate your website popular... i guess you shall be expecting more than 3000 unique... on the other hand, many people visits your website does not mean it is popular also..

you need to at least make people stay at your site longer..

if your site becomes a popular good topic among people.. you are successful to make your site popular..

I consider a website is a popular not only with the number of visitors but also in his SERP rankings.

I would say that the website is popular when its name (as a search term) is of the same popularity as the industry's top keywords.

I would say a website is popular when most people within a specific niche market are aware of and have visited the site.

For example, we all know that WHT is quite popular, but within the web hosting niche market. My guess is that the vast majority of people in general have never heard of WHT. But WHT is still "popular" where it counts.

That graph is particularly striking. Quite interesting (and surprising).

    that depends. on numerous factors.

if the site is niche, 3500 unique a day is major.

if its broad appeal, its just ok.

I remember they put banned commercial to their website at that time. I have no ideas about the August strike

When you have re-occurring visitors. Surely if you want to consider your site "genuinely" popular someone has to see it as a "general" favourite of theirs?
