Why does media temple use .net domain?

They own both .com and .net why do they use the .net as the main one?

I would say it's personal preference - there's no real reason to use one over the other and I think .net would apply to a hosting provider just as well as .com would

They're an old host. Back in the day, Internet Service Providers and hosting companies were using .net domains, as the .net TLD was intended to be used by network infrastructures. For mediatemple at this point, sticking to .net is probably more of a legacy thing than an active choice.

Thanks for the answer . To me a .net just looks a lot more unprofessional

Actually as Dan said .net is supposed to be for network providers where as .com is for commercial domains - either would work for a hosting provider and either is just as professional imho.

Now if it was mediatemple.biz or mediatemple.info.... I could see a serious lack of professionalism but of course this is just my opinion which differs from your own

IMO, .com and .net share pretty equal recognition and professional status.

It could also be for SEO purposes, since .net was used originally, and is still used, the majority of the links they receive are to the .net domain.

It's of no relevance either way, they both operate in the same fashion and both are professional top level domains

It only comes down to personal preference and I don't know why anybody would prefer one over the other myself unless one company owned the .net and another owned the .com.

    Bingo! lol

But honestly, its not really a big deal. But of course, that's my opinion. Like others have stated, its just the same. Both are commonly used and equally recognized...

You will receive the same level of service from MT regardless of the TLD they are using.

I agree, at this point they have both become pretty much equally respected.

I remember when MediaTemple pointed the .com to their web design division. The .net has alway pointed to their hosting division. As someone as said, it's a legacy thing.
