    Server Label/ID

    Hey everyone,

    For any hosts who colo in multiple datacenters. What kind of label system do you use to track all of your gear?

    We use an asset number system that tells us exactly where the server is in the DC, I guess you could add to it to also tell what facility it is in :

    Example :

    SE0305

    SE=server
    03=rack 03 (also switch 03 since switch numbers match rack #)
    05=server 5 in that rack (also means port 5 on the switch)

    So if we need to access a customer's server, an asset # tells us what we need to physically access it or if we need to access it's switch config quickly.

    Each rack's switches are labeled as :

    SW3A, SW3B

    SW=switch
    3= rack 3
    A=public switch
    B=private switch

    We also follow this for remote reboot PDUs (RE3A, etc).

    In hindsight I wish we had implemented something with the asset# to tell what PDU and port servers are plugged into. We can identify this without very much hassle but having it in the asset # would have made it instant. Of course we do have instances where that information changes if we need to balance power usage between PDUs in the same rack, where the information we have included in the asset # now is constant.

    We have a mod in WHMCS that ties the asset # to a customer, and also lists the available assets (servers) so we keep tabs on what is available.
    It also tracks what hardware is in each asset (motherboard, RAM, hard drives, etc). This keeps everything you need to know about your assets at your fingertips and from having to physically determine what and where each time.

    Hope this helps !

    Very good advice, especially if you don't have someone else working with you to shout to on the other side of the cabinet/rack.

    I have a server with iWeb and the ID looks like CL-T000-000CN. On their website they promote their HD and CL datacenter so the first part must be the datacenter. The rest must be location and server number. The "CN" at the end might be some internal code.

    LCD is really nifty but I would feel better with a physical label.
