    * Looking for DDOS protected VPS on EAST Coast

    Hi Everyone!

I'd be surprised if someone replies with what I'm looking for because I've been searching for the aforementioned VPS service for quite a while and so far come up with nada.

Well, not nada... I found ToughVPS, which by the way, appears to be very well priced and has all the features I need, however even though they're hosted in PA, the ping goes up >40ms from my current host (in NJ) and latency is one of the deciding factors.

    Required specs:
    • CentOS 5.x (either 32bit/64bit)
    • Minimum of 256MB RAM Burstable to 512MB
    • Minimum of 15GB space
    • Minimum of 500GB monthly bandwidth
    • DDOS protection/filtering
    • 3 IPs (either included or as addon)
    • cPanel (either included or as addon)
    • Prefer unmanaged (for cost reasons) otherwise managed

    Thanks guys,
    AHO

First what you have to understand is that there is a range of what is considered "DDoS protection" Just about every host offers some (limited) protection/filtering against DDoS attacks and they vary in effectiveness. From what I see ToughVPS runs Cisco Guard which is great since I've read some really good things about Cisco Guard & Detector. So make sure you dig a bit deeper whenever someone claims "DDoS Protection" since it may not be apples to apples.

That's going to be tough since most of the DDoS specialists that I've heard about are outside of the East Coast. What are you running that is that latency sensitive?

OP, your closest option for low latency to your location will be Gigenet.

Nnyan, I need just enough DDoS protection to be allow to run IRC services (in my case IRC bouncers). The reason I need the server to be on the East Coast is because I'm constantly having to travel to Europe. I get ~100ms to my server in NJ when abroad but the closest neighboring DDoS-protected VPS service is ToughVPS in PA @ ~140ms. Also, thank you for the information regarding DDoS-protection, it should come in handy.

IRCCo Jeff, thanks for the suggestion but it seems they're hosted in IL which is further away than PA. Plus their prices are a little outside my budget given their higher-than-required specs (RAM starts at 2GB on all Virtuozzo VPS plans and they're all managed).

My budget is between $25-$55 (that's including any necessary addons to meet the above specs).

I've used hostv, they have good service and from what i have found out the server is in NJ, I have no clue about their DDOS protection options

Thanks, I just checked out their site and spoke to their sales team. They seem to allow IRC as long as you're not doing anything illegal (duh) and the ping is even better than my current NJ-based host but for some reason I'm having speed issues with them.

They host a test zip file I was able to download at ~600KB/s compared to 1.2MB/s on my current host. To be honest, of all the possible obstacles I could think of I never would have guessed speed would be the one that stops me... I mean... they're both located in New Jersey after all and surely they all use a min of a 100Mbps link.

I love their double memory/bandwidth offer though.

I'm sure you could find a VPS that allows IRC for this price, but not with DDoS protection and even less so east coast.
