    Application stress testing

    Hi there

We've a site that has been causing us a huge issue today during UK working hours. Its an app for schools, so its only really active between 9am-4pm GMT. We've just done some changes to the code and are using nginx for serving images but would love to stress test it with a load of users before the real ones come again in the morning - what do you use to stress test your apps? Appreciate any suggestions

    All the best

Most people typically use apache bench, surge, or something along those lines. Unfortunately those programs don't really replicate actual behavior of a normal user.

That being said you should look into both of those as they'll shed some insight on a good portion of your application.

    *EDIT*

Here is an interesting article which tries to address this issue: http://globalspin.com/thebook/chapter15.html

    Hi Mark,

any specific areas of concern? what the web server can serve? database bottlenecks? Knowing the specific concerns would help to make useful suggestions

    Hi guys

Thanks for the fast responses! We've found one called Siege, but its installed on the server. We'd ideally like remote testing (I think) to test it in a real sense

Yes, real areas of concern are that for the past two days the server has become unreachable as the load has spiked seriously at times. We suspect that its a database issue are are looking into Memcache. We've just installed Nginx to server up static files but without doing some before and after testing we'll not know if what we're doing is working.

The site itself is www.enterprisecatalyst.co.uk and its a free profile tool that school children are using. This week there's a big push for people to use it and we've found that its causing a serious load on the server. Hope that helps to show you what we're trying to do

    All the best

You know what, I meant Siege and not Surge . Running it on the same server will likely be fine / still show you where the bottleneck is. Any reason you suspect the database? I'd imagine it would be something like a bunch of Apache children spawning / killing off the server.

I was suspecting database out of naivity Thats why we are looking at nginx for serving images/static files and possibly memcached. We weren't sure if running it on the server itself would give a true enough reflection.
