Question

What's the problem with Cogent ?

Hi All,

I have seen a lot of controversy with cogent around here. Their bandwith seems very cheap. I assume that their reliability therefore suffers. I have read the thread with the FDH Host (something like that).

My question is why is cogent so unliked here. Does everybody condemn it or is it just specific individuals?

Thanks

there is no problem with cogent, you just get what you pay for.

You are often routed around the USA 3 times before reaching your destination - so pings arent great.

Im a cogent fan

I'm in South Africa, and with our wonderful network topologies if I send a mail from my PC to a friend 100km away .. it almost always goes through the UK or USA .. so that doesn't hurt as much here.

Also the concept of speeds reching T1 and T2 are about as realistic as us seing Terminator1 and terminator2 in person as most connections are mostly 56k modems, 128k satellite, 128k ISDN and now ADSL at 512Down/256Up with a 3G cap p/m ....

So if I want to offer a service here the difference between a Cogent / HE line would not even be noticed ...
right / wrong ??

also does cogent have a lot more downitme ??

well where are you thinking of putting servers? cogent would probably be 1 of many providers of the DC is multihomed - so downtime wouldnt be down to cogent, just most your traffic would go through them.

Cogent is just fine as long as you aren't using ONLY Cogent, but this can be said for any bandwidth provider.

I can say from experience even "good" providers can be crappy as heck, I just moved from a DC using nothing but AT&T and it was down way too much, moral of the story, always always always have multiple routes to the internet! If one of those is Cogent I have absolutely no problem with that as long as my connection stays up

Well I am not making any decisions, but I'm just interested in case I want dedicated hosting in the future.

But assuming I find a host who does 100% cogent bandwith, and there are a few. I see that they are MUCH cheaper then most.

Assuming I get what I pay for, what exactly do I get ... I'm just interested to find out the reasons why cogent is half or even a third of the price of other BW providers.

Assuming I do not want burstable connections and Gigs of files in split seconds (over exaggeration - I know) but if that is not an issue are there any other main reasons I sohould be weary of them?

Do hosts using cogent tend to disapear and land up on the 'WHT Top 10 Most Wanted' list or is that not really a factor.
