    The Hotmail issue

Hello, I am currently having issues with sending email to Hotmail.

The email gets to the user, but it gets stuck in the Junk folder.

I have setup SPF, DomainKeys, rDNS and signed up to SNDS and I still do not know what to do.

    Domain: raf-bsccf.co.uk

    Thanks.

Your rDNS does not match the SMTP header sent out by your mail host, which may cause problems. Make sure to set the rDNS as the FQDN of that machine specifically, and not just the domain.

    Set it back

Here are the headers being used:

    PHP Code:
$headers "From: RAF Intranet <[email protected]>\n"// I suggest you try using only \n

    $headers .= "MIME-Version: 1.0\n"

    $headers .= "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1\n"

    $headers .= "Reply-To: me <[email protected]>\n"

    $headers .= "X-Priority: 1\n"

    $headers .= "X-MSmail-Priority: High\n"

    $headers .= "X-mailer: Intranet"

    Try asking Hotmail here http://postmaster.hotmail.com/

I had such problems everytime I add in a new server, just put a test domain and report to Hotmail, they will normally whitelist it.

    Small-ish update.

    Turned the following settings on:

Send outgoing mail from the ip that matches the domain name in /etc/mailips (*: IP can be added to the file to change the main outgoing interface)

Send HELO based on the domain name in /etc/mailhelo (*: HELONAME can be added to the file to change the default helo name)

and applied setting as per http://twiki.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vi...imDifferentIps.

Really not useful, at least 80% of the users use Hotmail, and it's good enough for me to use.

    Try communicating manually with your mailserver, e.g. "telnet host.domain.tld 25" . . .

After RCPT TO: in the standard conversation, and once your mail server realizes that it's not being asked to relay to a user or domain that it hosts, it should error out with 554 or similar. Yours just gives 250 OK. I bet hotmail thinks you're an open relay.

Several online tools report the same thing:

Testing 96.31.75.92 on port 25... successful! - the SMTP server is NOT an open relay

I'm using Putty to get in, and when I enter the command RCPT TO: I recieve error

true, however, I've done further testing, more online and ones by myself, but can't be 100%. Here's the report from abuse.net

    Mail relay testing

    Relay test result

Hmmn, at first glance, host appeared to accept a message for relay.

THIS MAY OR MAY NOT MEAN THAT IT'S AN OPEN RELAY.
Some systems appear to accept relay mail, but then reject messages internally rather than delivering them, but you cannot tell at this point whether the message will be relayed or not. You cannot tell if it is really an open relay without sending a test message; this anonymous user test DID NOT send a test message.

The open relay issue may be related to this http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=671553

As this "login grace period" is the default configuration for cPanel, and, presumably, many cPanel hosts send to hotmail, the open relay bit might not even be what's causing the hotmail problem in the first place.

At this point maybe your best option would just be to contact their support team and ask to be white-listed.

You would probably know if you had an open relay.

I don't think that you do. The best thing to do if your concerned about hotmail delivery is contact them and see if they will respond to you. They aren't going to whitelist you since you utilize the ipspace of someone else, if you owned the ip's it might be a little different.

I don't think in 2009 delivery to hotmail.com means anything to anyone. We specifically blacklist hotmail.com because of the spam we get from them and microsoft doing absolutely nothing about it. Hotmail is what the blue screen of death was in Windows.

Everything looks fine with your configuration. Can you deliver email to a gmail account without hitting the spam folder? What types of content are you putting in the test emails? Sometimes the content of the message will determine how it's handled.

Interesting The only reason I am fighting for this is becuase over 80% of the intranet users are likely to use Hotmail.

Yep, delivery to Yahoo, Gmail etc is perfect! The emails are HTML since we do apply some fonts and such occassionally. In the test emails, I am basically writing a little introductory email to the system, in HTML, with a few bullet points etc.

Where are you getting your facts about 80% of internet uses using hotmail; from the MSN Insider newsletter?

I think that the majority of internet uses utilize gmail and if your mail is going fine to gmail i'd say your good to go.

I don't know anyone that uses hotmail, haven't for years.

    EDIT!

I had the same problem. I sent them an email to WINLV.EDFS.00.00.EN.NCO.QUE.ES.T03.S....microsoft.com
and after a day or two I get a response and everything was ok. Please do not ask me where did I get this email address because I do not remember.

From the list of users (and emails) I've to add to the intranet. , it's a young generation, at least 90% on the list are teenagers.

Hmm interesting I' contacted Microsoft, and was informed that the IP was [blocked] as the server on the IP had sent spam mail before.

The rep has placed a fix for me. So, I'll report back in 48 hours

Yeap they will take a bit of time. But you are lucky it is Hotmail, at least they do reply though sometimes emails may shot back and fro before everything gets cleared up.

RadonSys Shamil, if you run into issues in the future it's probably going to be best for you to have your uplink do the contacting. Some network owners refuse to speak with other non-network owners. Microsoft is like that for the most part, some of their contacts refuse non-whitelisted contacts.

Let us know how things go for you.
