    Dovecot "Status=deferred" [Ubuntu 9.04]

I am trying to set up a mail server with postfix and dovecot. However I am getting a status = deferred error instead of status = sent in my log and the mail will not be sent. Sending a mail to hotmail/gmail works fine though.

    I used this tutorial h ttp://

And later updated to the Lenny tutorial h ttp://

The mailserver is running on Ubuntu 9.04 (desktop/32bit).

    Oct 24 14:29:19 pws-desktop postfix/qmgr[17007]: C01F71FE146: from=<[email protected]>, size=341, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
    Oct 24 14:29:19 pws-desktop postfix/pipe[17035]: C01F71FE146: to=<[email protected]>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.22, delays=0.15/0.01/0/0.06, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure)
The OS is running on a Dell 1600SC.

    Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop x86
    Kernel: 2.6.28-16 generic

    Dovecot: 1.1.11
Postfix: 2.5.5 (both provided by the ubuntu server team and installed using synaptic)

I'm not completely clear on your problem. is this correct?

    Your domain is
If [email protected] sends email to [email protected], everything works.
If [email protected] sends email to [email protected], you get the deferred line and the mail does not get delivered.
What is happening if [email protected] sends a mail to [email protected]?

When I send a mail from gmail to our domain (pws-hosting but it has the same error) it still wont work. However I can see it in the mail queue in webmin with a temporary failure message after it.

You're going to have to try harder if you want meaningful answers. Pastebin your configuration files somewhere.

Also, don't forget that the ubuntu maintainers think it's cool to add in awkwardly named, non-standard configuration files -- so chances are the tutorial you followed had a lot of little details left out.

For instance, dovecot.conf on every distro I've ever used except Ubuntu:

    Dovecot.conf on Ubuntu:

But don't let that fool you into thinking that they won't throw a useless dovecot.conf in there anyway just to confuse you -- because they will.

After spending an hour on something like this hopefully you'll realize that there are many better server distros than ubuntu

You have set your Local Delivery Agent to "dovecot" in Postfix. Make sure your postfix installation has enough permissions to spawn the "deliver" program (part of dovecot). Here is more info on Dovecot LDA:

Perhaps deliver cannot write to it's log files: If deliver fails to write to log files it exits with temporary failure.

@ e-Sensibility: I think that is indeed the problem. I will look into fixing it soon and post the results! (just using the conf made the server crash so possibly have to make some adjustments)

    Thanks for the replies.
