Dedicated server for a wordpress site (10000-15000 visitors a day)
I'm currently on jaguarpc's semi-dedicated hosting and every now and then I've been getting emails from them that my site is overloading their servers. They disabled web-access 5-6 times without my consent!
This is now forcing me to move to dedicated hosting. I was paying jaguarpc $30 a month and now paying them $100 a month for hybrid hosting which is as close as dedicated (according to them atleast).
My budget is $100-$170 a month. I have plans to expand my website to somewhere around 25000 people a day. This site, as mentioned in the title, is a wordpress site.
Which host/hosting will be best for me?

I think a large high-performance VPS will suit you well, since you will most likely need management as well. If you're not currently running any wordpress caching system, you should consider one, as well as offloading any uploaded images to some free image host.

What is the difference betweeen Managed VPS and semi-dedicated then? I thought going dedicated would be the safest best
I have been running wordpress super cache plugin, but it has instead made loading super slow

I believe with this budget 100-170$ , you will be able to find a good Dc and server.
What server specification you need (Ram/HDD/Control Panel/Managed or unmanaged/Bandwidth) and of course Location ?

Where is your main usebase located? If you are looking at the US I would say www.hostdime.com or www.softlayer.com should be able to do something that will fit your needs, you could go with softlayer's WDC datacenter if you are looking at Europe also, or www.poundhost.com who are also pretty good!

I'm a bit n00b when it comes to choose the HDD and RAM as I've never used dedicated before. I would certainly need a managed one as I need cpanel to manage my website.

Get an unmanaged dedicated from a company with directadmin. You can get a good quad core one with 8gb ram for around 100$.

Even so, if he cannot manage a server he will be open to all sorts of not nice hacks, attacks, performace issues etc, and the chances are he would end up paying someone a lot to fix it all, take out a managed server, or a server and a management package and you should be fine

Lightspeed/nginx and Wordpress Super Cache on a dedicated server will be the best bet. That said, if you are not familiar with server management you should look to get that included.

How much monthly bandwidth do you consume? With that budget you can definitely find a good dedicated server.
I would recommend pacificrack.com They are running a special on their e5200 servers with 4gb ram, only $99 a month.
Good luck.

At the high end of your budget you should be able to get a cPanel based dedicated server to meet your needs, unmanaged of course. This would of course offer you the most flexibility in terms of transfer, storage and processing power.

If you are semi-profficent in managing a server (as youve already have a VPS and hybrid), then you could choose Gigenet who are a managed (but not full managed) dedicated server provider.
They have a good reputation and provide managed services (think its 2 hours admin time a month - they will also do the initial set up). For $10 a month, they monitor your server via ping and HTTP and if any goes down, it auto opens a ticket on your behalf which has a response time SLA of 15mins. So its almost proactive monitoring!
I'd recommend you speak to someone from sales and ask them for a good deal! I've had my server with them for just over a week now and support has been fantastic.
EDIT: I wouldnt get an Atom like suggested below. Wordpress is known to be resource hungry. Your expecting a lot of visitors. Stick to a Core 2 Duo/Quad.Last edited by psmith98752; 11-09-2009 at 04:25 PM.

I think for your budget you should be able to get a good sized server, I would contact companies and work with them directly to meet your custom needs. Anyone who is willing to work with you in detail will work out in the long run as they are taking time to provide you what you need and not just A server.

The hybrid server will be leaps ahead of the semi-dedicated so I would say your safe for a while. Even when loads start to creep up as you gain more users at this level you could just split a service or two to a mid level vps and still avoid any large full managed dedicated server prices. We are of course all too happy to help you keep growing with us. Feel free to get with me if you would like me to take a peek at your account.

semi-dedicated hosting is something we sorta made up years and years ago and several have followed suit. Its basically a shared plan where we are taking care of everything for you but on a very limited user count system. Instead of a shared server where you are sharing resources with 50, 100, 150 or more depending on your host (we aim for 100 shared per node), on semi-dedicated you will have a harder limit of 15-20 users per node. Its for those people that love simplicity of shared hosting but need power of a vps without having to actually mess with a vps.

@ JAG: I see jaguarpc in your signature that has further flamed me up. The site that was upgraded to hybrid server just yesterday has been down since 12 hours. My sponsors are literally yelling at me!
I have submitted many tickets so far and none of them have been answered. I'm planning to move to some nice dedicated server with cpanel installed now.
edit: the online+telephone support is offline since 20 hours!

We are sorry for the problem you have faced , your ticket was not in support queue earlier and thus got delayed , we are working to fix any pending issues for your migration and will keep you updated in your ticket.
Also I am talking to the techs that handled the migration so that the DNS related problem that occurred in this case is not repeated.
Also I can assure you this is not the norm and an isolated issue which should not repeat.
Also the last few tickets opened were all in sales queue overnight and were thus not replied as sales is not working 24/7, in any such situation please make sure that you open a ticket in support department so that any pending issue is handled timely.Last edited by Jag-Rizwan; 11-10-2009 at 11:33 AM.
