    Raid card for SuperMicro 1U ( 6016-MT)

Hi, we have some supermicro 6016-MT with 4 x SATA2 Harddrives, and would like to use raid 1/5/10.

On Dell, its very "easy" to find a raid controller, and i have never been worried about this before, but with supermicro im a little confused.

    Server: supermicro.com/products/system/1U/6016/SYS-6016T-MT.cfm

I was looking at Adaptec 3405, ( adaptec.com/en-US/support/raid/sas_raid/SAS-3405/ ) but are not sure if this is the right card for this server. Is this overkill or to small a card for a 4 disk 1u server?

About cabling: On Adaptec's site they state

"Cable: one Mini SAS x4 to (4x) SATA fanout cable w/ sideband (2247000-R), 0.5 meter"

But are this cable the correct one for a server like this with backplane and everything, or should i look for a special cable? if so, anyone know what i need to order?

    Any help would be appriciated

    Thanks
    Scewl

We use the Adaptec 2405 on Supermicro boards for RAID 10.

Same, used to use 3Ware but 2405's are ideal for a 4disk RAID10 setup

    thanks for your answers

Did you have to purchase additional cables, or is the ones from the 2405 box enough?

I think i found the soloution myself after lots of googling :-) for reference here is Adaptec + supermicro soloution guide

    adaptec.com/NR/rdonlyres/4A68FD49-707E-4861-891D-56BA9FB63560/0/Adaptec_RAID_Compatibility_Reference_Guide.pdf

It seems that the cable needed for my particular sm server is the same which comes with both the 2405 and 3405 card.

They usually come with a 4 way multi-lane cable, so you won't need anything else.

Just make sure you have a PCI-E riser in your machine

The Adaptec card is a good one. I have used several different manufacturers but have always been happy with capabilities and support provided by Adaptec.

The model you chose will work with your backplane.

  8. NOT SO FAST! the fan-out cable come with all Adaptec 5405/3405/2405 RAID cards won't fit the supermicro SC813MT chassis because the SATA connectors from the fan-out cable is too long to fit the tiny space between fan cage and female connectors on the backplane for hot-swap drive bays.

    solutions:
    1. find a fan-out cable with 4x 90-degree (right-angle) SATA connectors
    2. use a SATA "bridge"/coupler ports, such as:
    http://tekgems.com/Products/tg-et-24...xbk-s2p-01.htm
then, you can connect the SATA cable (90-degree connector at backplane side) supplied by supermicro to one end, and multilane fan-out cable from adaptec to the other end. you will need just one 2-port bridge because only 2 middle ports on the backplane have the clearance issue. remove the metal bracket so that you can secure the bridge ports inside chassis.
    3. use 3ware fan-out cable (must be CBL-SFF8087OCF-06M)which has shorter SATA connectors. you still must modify the mid-chassis fan cage a bit so that the SATA connectors can fit.

[email protected], This is good explanation and soloution. i went back to the data center and opened one, and i can see thats it must be the mid 2 fan cage which could be a problem.

There must be someway to get the fans out, so its easier to modify.

Also i wonder if this scenario is same "problem" with sm's 8 x 2.5" 1u chassis.? Anyone?

Thanks again for great info. supermicro isnt a big brand in our country, so not much dealers/dists have experience with this.

    thanks

    Thank you

First sorry for resurrecting old thread but it came up when searching on google plus there are some excellent responsed especially from [email protected]

    1) I just want to confirm that the following right angle cable would fit the 1U supermicro chassis. I don't want to spent an extra 40 dollars on adaptec 2405 with cable when I can get one withoput cable lot cheaper.

    Supermicro CBL-0278L FAN-OUT Cable With 4X 90D SATA Connectors
    http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=60383

    2) adaptec 2405 is low profile card, would I still need riser card for SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL+-F LGA 1155 in 813MTQ-350CB chassis and if yes which would be the best card?

I am thinking the following since adaptec is x8 and motherboard has x8 pcie

    Supermicro CSE-RR1U-E8 1U SXB-E Slot to PCI-E Riser Card
    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=29194&...ure=SuperMicro

  11. fast forward to 2011, CBL-0278L fan-out cable and CSE-RR1U-E8 riser card are the standard accessories exactly what we use to install hardware RAID card in SC813MT/SC813MTQ chassis.

again, you need to swap 1st 40x40x28 fan with the last dummy fan so that RAID card can can get decent air flow or you can just add 5th fan (FAN-0065L4 with CBL-0088L power extension cable).

Awsome Thank you [email protected], that helps a lot, I have just placed an order for all the items. Now as for the heat sink for LGA 1155, would you recommend passive or shall I get an active heat sink. There is one from rosewill http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16835200064 which fits 1U lga1155

^ yes price is one of the reasons. I got the card at 195.00, no tax and with free shipping.

Another reason is, there are lot of good reviews for this card and Adaptec seems to be the company well supported by Linux Distros. I won't be using raid 5 or any of that and think the 512 cache won't make much of the difference for raid 10.

For 110 more you can get 4x the cache and handle 6G/s drives.. This seems like a no brainer. 110 shouldn't break your bank.
