www.completelydedicated.com offers cheap service. Don't know how they are though. If you want to play around why not just get a Linux VPS?

Beat me to it, $25/mo is the cheapest I've seen in the dedicated hosting offers forum.

I'm very tempted to get this:
    $35/mo from WSI
    P4 3Ghz HT, 2GB, 250GB
    5 Usable IP addresses
1500GB Transfer per month on a 100Mbit port or 10Mbit Unmetered
Your choice of Linux (CentOS, Debian, etc)
DirectAdmin Control Panel free on request
    What's your budget?

    Seriously, what's your budget?

Do you want to physically purchase the server and shipped to your house? If so, the "other hosting related offers" section has some P4 and P3 servers for sale, for less than $100 a piece.

Check out lowendbox.com, there's one provider listing $5/month dedicated servers (although the waiting list is ~20 days long).

$5 per month? That would not even cover the cooling and electricity bill. *sigh*

Guess it depends on what the poor reviews are about; lack of support (for $5/month what'd you expect), unstable systems (well, it's just for messing around; non-production).

For me, it'd be good-enough for a throwaway server. Although for $5/month, that'd barely cover even the largest bulk colo contracts I've seen...gotta wonder how much of that offering is a loss-leader.

Huh? How is a $5-$20/month dedicated server cheaper than slapping down at least $500 to acquire and now maintain a 1U chassis + $30-100/month colocation costs? Especially if the guy is just "...messing around..."?

I had a $10 box at hostmds and never had a problem with it. I moved off it because I had no real need for it other than curiosity. Wasn't bad, was exactly what they said it was. No problems at all in the 3 months I had it.

I recently bought one at http://www.interserver.com , what I liked: cheap (US$39 dual core atom), this far: good.

Cheapest server I've ever seen was the $10 one from HostMDS. If they stay up, which it sounds like they do, that's a great deal. Even I can't get my costs on a dedicated server below $10.

    $10? that's ridiculous. I'm paying $349/month

So do we agree HostMDS and WSI/Corenetworks are the cheapest ?

Yeah... but I just took a look at the packages it offer.... Pentium 3..... 256MB, 20GB DD, that's barely enough for some really basic services, some static pages, maybe a couple of simple dynamic pages (php, maybe a blog, or other things), and... little traffic. Most VPSs around can outperform... but, it was around ~US$7 or so (for that price you use to get a shared hosting).

If you have servers at your house, and want static ips.. Just buy a vpn service.. Get a linux box for your network gateway (inhouse), or compatible router (dd-wrt).. find a vpn service that offers static ip addresses.. Then buy a /29 /28 /27, etc whatever you need and have them routed over the vpn. Then you can assign static ips to the servers in your home.

The latency gets a bit high if the vpn server is too far away. But if you can find something in your state/city it should work out. (Or just buy a vps/dedicated server near you and set up your vpn instead of buying a vpn as a service). The pentium 3 mentioned before could route 10mbit+ of vpn traffic easily.

    some feedback about corenetworks service,
I have dedicated servers at Corenetworks more than a year,
And must admit I am satisfied with servers,
no failures, fast and kind support.
