DNS servers/clusters or standalone servers running DNS each ?

I just want to know your opinions on this. Sometimes we can't see some benefits others see about their way of doing things and viceversa.

It will be interesting to read your point of views regarding this.

    So,

Do you always set up dns servers/cluster ?
What way do you set it up (array, software, etc) ?
What advantages or disavantages you find about your setup ?

I think we all can get nice advices and tips about this.

    Thanks

    Greetings:

Yes, we recommend setting up DNS -- ns1, ns2, etc.) on their own physical servers, OR VPS nodes.

    Thank you.

I would say the best method for any setup would be to use an outsouced DNS Provider, ive been looking at edgedirector.com they seem to offer alot for a little.

Clustering makes it a lot easier to move sites between servers within a cPanel cluster. You've also got better options for redundancy...

If you have your DNS on a single cPanel box, if that box goes down for a reboot any mail sent to that server will be returned to sender with an error. If the MX is down but the DNS is up, the sending server will attempt to re-try delivery later.

We use a DNS cluster (four servers) for all our shared hosting and resellers.

The resellers have their own nameservers, which just are aliases for our own nameservers. (The resellers use the same IPs as our own nameservers.)

    The major advantages include:

    - Email is retried for delivery even if the customer's server is down.

    - It is super easy to move an account from one server to another at any time. ie: Have an older server full of resellers with their own nameservers? No problem. No need for the major headache and hassle of trying to get every reseller to update their nameserver IPs, etc..

Plus, a DNS server really adds very little resource usage to existing servers. (ie: If you don't have dedicated DNS servers, then just use whatever servers you have. Not much extra "load" is added, and it is well worth the benefits.

DNS clustering over VPS servers at multiple locations is probably the most redundant and reliable method.
Either that or outsource it to a another company.
