NEWS: Twitter updates on Google search

    http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/...nd-search.html

At Google, our goal is to create the most comprehensive, relevant and fast search in the world. In the past few years, an entirely new type of data has emerged real-time updates like those on Twitter have appeared not only as a way for people to communicate their thoughts and feelings, but also as an interesting source of data about what is happening right now in regard to a particular topic.

Given this new type of information and its value to search, we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results. We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months. That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you'll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.

Just as long as Google search results aren't flooded with the crap that is posted on twitter. Ok, not all of twitter tweets are crap, but a LOT of them are, so I'm hoping Google search results aren't effected by this.

I agree, as long as they are relevant and good content.

I agree with Aussie, I am now going to have to scan over peoples twitters if I search for something? I am sorry, but tweets are not google worthy.

There is already a billion other places to talk about this and see comments on this. We dont need another

I agree with the Bob but will go even further.

    Twitter's just a spammer's wankfest.

Most I've viewed seem like someone's just posted the contents of their spambox online.

I was going to try and get into TwitterMania but all the spam crap just threw Twitter right down the Sh*tter IMHO.

If they don't do something to clear it up, Twitter will fade and people will stop using it.

I think google must have thought about that before we do, and their spam analyzing techniques are quite advanced. I hope they will be able to deliver "relevant" results.

I would like to see a couple examples of what results could be relevant. What would I search for that a tweet would be relevant information

I doubt it, as Twitter aren't making money yet. They're still in that burning through investors cash, waiting to be bought out by Google phase.

Lol. That is the stage that so many Silicon Valley companies are in, I suspect!

    Good point, though.

Agreed 100%. I have a feeling this will get out of control real quick. I have a Twitter account and have posted probably less than a dozen tweets. Still, when doing a search for something related to me, one of my tweets showed up at the top of page 2. I can only imagine the number of spammers rubbing their hands in delight as they conspire how to abuse this new opportunity.

IMO, even with Google's sophisticated algorithms, we will end up seeing google search results heavily polluted with spam tweets.

I was actually thinking the same thing, mainly for two reasons. 1. It gives tweeter more credit by being supported by google search. 2. Its a great selling point for when they initiate their paid accounts which they are planning.
    3. It also increases their overall value.

To what Bob said, yes they are burning through cash, but this may help them raise more money if needed and make them a better buyout assest.

The only thing that kills everything that I just said is that I do not think google would do this, even for money if they did not see some advantage for them. Just look at what they did with google checkout, they offered $10 credit for first time users that got horribly abused and at $10 a pop, even for a $500 purchase would cause them to lose money.

I can only hope that you're wrong and things turn out the opposite... although I don't think they will

I'm still amazed at how easy it is for spammers to take over Twitter. It's almost like they didn't give any consideration to that when planning for the website.

Anyways, I can only hope being connected with Google will improve things a little.

One more quick question... How the heck can Twitter handle Google traffic? I get the Twitter is too busy message EVERY day...

In reference to the relevance of results, I would believe they would add a small section which you could dig further into. Such as the maps, or adverts, when you place a search. They have that little area outlined/mis-aligned above the rest of your results.

    Google - Bing

I would think it may look like it does with the greasemonkey add-on for firefox, and these scripts that pull twitter results into Bing, or Google.
