    Hi,

Do these VPS nodes also come with private networking between the nodes?

    Regards,

Sure, that can be accomplished. Just shoot us an email sales@databasebydesignllc.com indicating your needs. We can setup 2 or more VM's with unmetered private networking, just let us know.

I'm looking at the Virtual Server Series I.

But in this thread I read this :

What makes our Virtual Servers better than the competition?
    • Powered by Dual Intel Quad Core Xeon Processors

    DBD Virtual Server Series I
    • Equal Share Dual Nehalem CPU (2 Core)

At your site I read this :

    DBD Virtual Server Series I
    Server Specifications:
    • Dual Quad Core Nehalem
    • Equal Share CPU (2 Core)

    What is it ?
    Dual Quad Core Xeon ?
    Dual Nehalem (2 Core) ?
    Dual Quad Core Nehalem ?

How many cores are available to a Virtual Server Series I, 2, 4, or 8 cores ?

    Hello,
The Nehalem line of processors are quad core xeon. We occasionally offer other dual quad core powered xeon virtual servers such as the Harpertown. I.e. All virtual servers are powered by dual quad core. The Series I, II, III, IV are powered by Dual Nehalem's (Dual Quad Core).
To sum up the Series I is:
Powered by Dual Quad Core Nehalem Processors of which 2 core's are allocated in a equal share fashion.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Risking getting into an argument in your sales thread. Which I ceratinly do not want.
I just tried to get things clear.
I know the difference between a Xeon Nehalem and Harpertown. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to have asked my question.
"Powered by Dual Intel Quad Core Xeon Processors" doesn't make it clear whether it is the older or newer generation Xeon. It could also mean that you run nodes of both generations.
The "older" Harpertown doesn't have the onchip memory controller like the Nehalem. Which makes this deal even sweeter.
And "Equal Share CPU (2 Core)" could mean a Wolfdale a 2 core CPU.

Twisting your arm even further :
"To sum up the Series I is:
Powered by Dual Quad Core Nehalem Processors of which 2 core's are allocated in a equal share fashion."
So your limiting your Series I nodes to 4 VPS servers ?
    Say yes!

    Sorry for the confusion.
We say " Powered by Dual Intel Quad Core Xeon Processors" at the top of our page because all servers are indeed powered by some form of Dual Quad Core Xeon.
When you get into the body of the page you see the individual VPS plans. This is where it gets more specific and indicates if the processor is a Harpertown, Nehalem, ect. For our Series I - IV they are all powered by Dual Nehalem processors. We occasionally offer other types of plans such as our High Capacity plan which is powered by Dual Harpertowns, which is indicated in the plan details.
When you see Equal Share CPU (2 Core) this indicates how many cores the VPS is allocated. For the series 1 it is allocated 2 cores in a equal share fashion (not dedicated)

    Hope this helps

The # of VM's per node varies due to the different plans we offer. Typically around 12 vm's per node.
Keep in mind the nodes are quite "beefy"
    Dual E5520 (16 logical cores)
24GB RAM (4GB set aside for the hypervisor)
    4x300GB 15K RPM SAS
    RAID-10 /w 256MB cache and BBU
    Gigabit uplinks

    Your website is a mess.
Now I remember again where the initial confusion came from.
I'll have the $22.72/mo "DBD Dedicated Server Series I [Wolfdale]" plan at your homepage.
It has the exact same specs as the $22.72/mo "DBD Virtual Server Series I" on this page.
But at least it is dedicated with 2 dedicated Wolfdale cores, alas no onchip memory controller.
They even have the same purchase link with the same product-ID pid=51.
Sorry but I'm passing up, I need to be sure what's in the box.

The title was copied over incorrectly - thank you for bringing that to our attention, it is now fixed.

For final clarification for anyone else this special is powered by dual quad core Nehalem CPUs

This is exactly how it will appear to the system:

    PHP Code:
    cat /proc/cpuinfo grep Xeon
    model name
    Intel(RXeon(RCPU           E5520  2.27GHz
    model name

I'm a little confused as well.

When you said "it is allocated 2 cores in a equal share fashion",

    1) Are those 2 cores physical cores or logical Nehalem cores counting hyperthreading?
    2) Does each series I VPS get 2 cores, or are those 2 cores shared by all the series I VPS on that node?
    3) If all series I VPS are sharing just 2 cores, what are the other 6 cores (assuming we're talking about physical cores) used for?

Also in your original ad you mentioned "100Mbps Virtual Network Port" while in a later post you mentioned that nodes have gigabit uplinks. Does that mean each node has a 1gbps port speed while each VPS get a 100mbps virtual port?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

    Hope this helps:

Q: Are those 2 cores physical cores or logical Nehalem cores counting hyperthreading?
A: logical Nehalem cores counting hyperthreading

Q: Does each series I VPS get 2 cores, or are those 2 cores shared by all the series I VPS on that node?
A: each series I VPS get 2 cores

Q: What are the other 6 cores (assuming we're talking about physical cores) used for?
A: All CPU cores are load balanced across the virtual machines running on the node.

Q: Does that mean each node has a 1gbps port speed while each VPS get a 100mbps virtual port?
A: Correct, each VM has a 100Mbps vSwitch port while the host node has 1Gbps uplink.

How much swap space do the VPS get? Is it the same as memory (eg. 1G RAM + 1G swap for series I)?

Most operating systems will allocate 2x the physical memory; so in the case of the Series I you would be looking at 2GB as default however you can request this to be larger/smaller.

No worries. You were correct, we did have mistakes on the site which caused confusion. You asked plenty of great questions that I am sure others had as well.
