What makes free Hosts different?
Apart from being free, of course. I can see thousands of free webhosts, many of which even don't put ads, and still support Databases, custom domains, even unbelievable bandwidths. Still, how does premium webhosts remain at the top? Or what is the problem with these free hosts?
Please enlighten me.

Quality of support and service may be the greatest difference. A free hosting provider would let almost anyone sign up which may lead to abuse to the hosting environment that can effect everyone on the same server.

I agree the support and service is definitely different. There would be a lot of limitations as to the things you could control with free hosts compare to hosts that you pay for. Which is a major issue depending on the needs of your site.

In free host there will be downtime for many hours and days, you can't ask or question any one. If the customers website is of less importance it might not be a problem. There will not be any data security, the backup will not be taken. And ofcourse the support, it will be as different as day and night. If you pay for hosting, there will be quality in that. They will be offering 100% uptime, good customer support.. and list goes on..
Thanks,
Nick Joyce

How about they are free
1. Since it's free, they will not provide great uptime or even guarantee it.
2. They will not have the staff to keep up with customers, and therefore customer service will be poor.
3. They may not offer all features paid hosts will have, i.e. fantastico
4. hey may not even offer cPanel, DirectAdmin or similar control panel
5. They may place ads on your site
6. They will not last long, as they don't have the income to cover expenses
7. Servers may be overloaded
8. Servers may not be able to handle the diversity of websites on it, i.e. being slow
9. Server maybe used for spamming or other violations
10. There will be restrictions on what you can host and do

When you compare free to paid you will see differences and support, uptime being one of the most important factors you probably wouldn't see that quality on a free host.
Fully customized hosting to your specific needs, no general plans found here!

Another thing would be always seeing free hosts go belly up. Since all that free stuff costs money, with limited to no money coming in its hard to keep it rolling.

I have tested many free host and 1 think I have noticed with a simple html site typically it goes well but if you have a data base, php, or some other advanced code then html the site will run sluggish and time out. You may have problem trying to use install scripts also. Then you have a paid solution which most normally all that I just mentioned works fine.

Quite a few things:
How does the host generate any revenue to stay in business?
How long will they be in business before their business model is busted?
Quality of network
Under-Resourced infrastructure
Lack of support.
This pretty much sums up everything..you get what you pay for.
