    Certifications, Associations and Awards?

    Hey everyone,

In the never-ending search to become more "credible". We're looking for all associations, certifications and awards that we can apply for.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

(Examples: Better Business Bureau, GreenGrid etc..)

See what awards some of the big hosts have earned, then see what it takes to get them. e.g. http://www.lunarpages.com/awards/

Better Business Bureau is one that you should probably look at getting
There are a few ISO certifications that are good to have as well

yes, I've been looking into applying for hosting awards, but the majority looked skewed to favor advertisers. Who's legit?

Have to disagree with the Better Business Bureau recommendation. For one, it's costly and anyone who has started a business has probably been contacted by them offering to endorse your business for a hefty fee.

It depends on how you define "legit". More expenditure will result in more exposure nearly everywhere.

Good point. I just can't help but wonder how many of these awards are bought/paid for by advertising... Doesn't seem right when there isn't an application process involved.

I really wouldn't place too much credence on these award schemes. Most people treat them with a healthy scepticism.

Once you have a basic stable of customers, their recommendations carry much more weight. More poignantly, the way your web site comes across is what really sways user opinions in your favour and there are many elements to consider from design, through products offered, price, to how informative and easy to use your site is; not least, how well written it is.

I agree largely with RedRat-Chris (hey, you're not accidentally making a hosting brand out of this name:-)); in the long run building stable customer relationships is what pays most dividend unless you go for the mass market where you have such deep pockets for marketing that you can buy any award/affiliate premium that you like.

I don't agree.. I think there is a spot in the middle as well. However to a lot of "hobby hosts" the middle may seem like "deep pockets"
