    My research on a webhost

    Hi,

So I decided to do research on the uptime of a host at first I thought it would be silly to monitor the host's main site but wasn't I wrong these guys now I know its only been a 13 days since I started my program you might be be suprised though

    http://www.siteuptime.com/stat.php?UserId=104688
Monitor Name Service Last check Uptime Current Status
Justhost http October 13, 2009 at 6:46 AM 100.000% Ok
Dreamhost http October 13, 2009 at 6:44 AM 99.887% Down
MM Hosting http October 13, 2009 at 6:46 AM 99.424% Ok
Hostgator http October 13, 2009 at 6:47 AM 100.000% Ok

Now honestly I don't understand there has been 5 outages lasting an average of ~20 minutes each in 13 days. Something you may find useful to find your own host =)

99.425%? Wow, that's pretty low - it amounts to quite a few hours downtime per month. Good job on being wise and monitoring the uptime before making a choice

Is also great to see JustHost and HG have 100% no problems.

It was around one hour for them, take account the monitoring is from the 1st to the end of the month so the percentage will go up everyday... But your right it has been over and hour in downtime for just that one....

Offtopic when does the "This forum requires that you wait 180 seconds between posts." get lowered?

That's true - I was thinking that downtime of around 0.5% amounts to 220 minutes per month (so was going off that), but since it's not even half a month yet it would only need to be a little over an hour to cause the figures to go like that.

To be honest I'm not sure sorry - you can try asking in the helpdesk: http://helpdesk.webhostingtalk.com/

There's no excuse for repeated downtime. As soon as a host recognizes a problem it should be rectified.

    Keep researching like you are.

Maybe some hosts should get a third party to host for their own site?

Nice research mate. Just as @ldcdc said, some hosts really need a third-party hosting provider to host their sites

Some host do keep there main site on a seperate server, so that clients can contact them if there is a problem/outage on the 'customers' server.
    Quite sound logic,
but it does 'tend' to imply they don't have total confidence with what there providing there customers with,
but then if it's the customers that may cause problems to the server, it makes sense.

ps, which 'just host' are you refering to ?

Of course, and it is a wise choice, but do they leave server management in the hands of a third party? Apparently, some should.

    another outage
Still ongoing. Maybe it's their way of stopping sales from coming in and flooding them.

Haha I wish that I would to do that... Would be nice if mmhosting and dreamhost would come forward to there reason of not being able to provide high uptime for there very own website!

HostAtree is not big enough on the scale that I'm testing out... Yahoo I will add today and maybe hivelocity...

I can only add 6 without having to pay more then the $10 per month I pay now...

Remember (for those asking for other hosts to be added) that there's also:

I know that LiquidWeb are on the VPS rankings, not sure about some of the others.

Me too, I consider this host as a company with a good reputation at the market.

    Hi!

So, joining to the horde, add interserver.net .....

    and....

You need to pay to get that service? can't you just install zabbix or nagios on a: VPS or dedicated server, or even on your home computer? I can't do that, because my ISP is really, really bad, so, the numbers wouldn't be accurate.

Also, I think that most hosting providers do host their services in their own data center, why?: because they can have a faster response time to get their site up again in case of some problem, instead of having to call a third party to fix it.

Anyway, good research, keep up the good work!

Compring all hosts listed in this post I would give a preference to Host Gator.

Just to add to the confusion, try and find out if it's network or server outages. While both have a similar result, the network outages could have been caused by their provider and outside of their control.

I see your point, but I think that to the effect (quality of service) it would be pretty much the same: no network, no services either :-S .
