In a nutshell, a dedicated server is a real physical machine. VPS is a "virtualized" server that is created within a dedicated server, e.g. 1 dedicated server could contain 5 smaller VPS servers running within it.

Well in reality, they will "appear" to be exactly the same thing - simply, a server! The main difference will be the size/power of the server, and hence cost, e.g. A basic VPS will be starting from $20/mo, and a dedicated server from $150/mo, etc.

In both cases for a 'beginner' look for a managed provider that will help you with support and provide you with a control panel like cPanel/DirectAdmin. That will help you a lot as you typically won't have to worry about much things at the low-level (e.g. SSH, command-line operations).

A VPS would be far better for a beginner, go for a small one that is relatively cheap. This way you can learn with it. Just like many users did, on a VPS. Most of the time the VPS provider will help the user with most things.

There are both managed and unmanaged VPS and dedicated servers. Managed VPS/servers will obviously cost more.

It will vary by managed provider. Your best bet would ask the provider what management services they provide.

I don't think there would be in much of performance differences. But for the cost you would have to check with the provider. I would check the offers area. There are many managed providers there.

I would recommend installing it on your home machine if you are practicing. You can try VMWARE out first.

More than likely you would probably get better performance from a server vs a VPS, and cost you would expect more to pay for a server than a VPS, and why pay the extra expense if you are practicing

One big difference between vps and a dedicated server is the price.. The quality of service you get sometimes is a case to case basis for companies. I suggest you go for a vps if you're a beginner so you don't need invest a lot of money since you're still learning.

VPS hosting has come down in price in recent months and would be a good hosting solution for a beginner. Most go to VPS hosting for different reasons, multiple sites, increased traffic, dedicated RAM and disk space resources, running applications, reselling etc. What do you want to serve? Find out your needs then do some comparison shopping.
