I haven't used or seen Megavideo before, but i'm guessing it's just another video/file uploading/sharing site.
To host such a service, you would need very powerful servers. Not to mention a huge amount of storage, very high speed HDD's for the I/O that will be required, plus data redundancy and backups for all of the data. I would recommend some kind of huge raid 10 array.
I would go definitely for something in the dual cpu quad core xeons range, with a minimum of 8gb ram, 1gbps port definitely. Total bandwith for the plan would need to be a huge amount too... Can't really put a figure on that without knowing how many users would use it.
I'm currently with Limestone and happy with them, but there are many out there with similar pricing and service.Last edited by XENnode; 10-10-2009 at 07:59 PM.

Thanks for the nod our way.
To also answer the OP's question, bandwidth usage can be quite high on video sharing sites. The biggest determinator, though, is how popular the web site is. To begin with, a modest video sharing web site may not use that much bandwidth until it goes substantially.

I second that - it all depends on how popular your site will be.
MegaVideo is quite popular, just like MegaUpload and thus it also runs not from a single server but from a cluster of hundreds of servers.
Of course if you just starting and want to check the idea, you can begin with a single server, unless of course you do have a large budget for advertising and building the system upfront.
In any case I wouldn't recommend selecting an entry level server for that, as it will require quite some computing power (CPU and RAM) to convert the videos to FLV format and video files take up a lot of space. Also I always recommend to use at least RAID1 configuration.

Just a note, you'd certainly benefit from choosing a RAID10 configuration with SAS 15k rpm HDD's. That will give you great I/O for the constant reading/writing required by such a service.
But again as stated above (which I forgot to say) you'll definitely need some large sized clusters to support this kind of service. If you are really interested in starting this kind of thing.
My suggestion would to be to purchase a dedicated server just to host the website, something not as powerful as the servers required to store and send video files. Single CPU with 4gb ram would be plenty. This way the website would still load nice and fast because users won't be using up the websites bandwith from the downloads/uploads.
After that you can decide on the servers you'll be using to host the actual video files.

You do realize that pretty much no video sharing site is actually making money? Even Youtube is still running at a loss. Besides there are 1001 small sites just like this.
You will need one heck of a business plan, and a deep pocket to match.Powered by Level3, GBLX and AT&T

Yet, VC's and some other companies were ready to buy or invest from dozens of millions to billions of dollars into large video sharing sites (i.e. YouTube, MetaCafe etc.)
It takes time to build a business and make it profitable. Video sharing sites right now are fighting to get the most market share, but once the market will be settled and smaller players will go out of business the rules will change.
In my opinion large video sharing sites will eventually become direct competitors to the TV for the video commercials. The infrastructure is already in place - all it takes is to make a small change in the embeddable player to make it show video commercials before and after the clip and the system will become quite profitable instantly.
However just like with banner network the size does matter. Nobody is interested in a network that is able to show 10,000 or even 100,000 banners a month. However a banner network with billions of views is an interesting advertising partner, as among other things it also allows you to spend your advertising dollars more efficiently and work with a single provider.
Thus right now they are working to get as many placements as possible, and each embedded clip in any place, be it a web site, a blog, etc. is a potential money making machine - once they will start using it. This is in addition to the traffic that goes directly to their main website.

I believe that the key to success is Video audio Encoding System , For Example this is HQ Video from Youtube 864×460 resolution with 37 MB Size , but after i download this file and i Encode it again with same resolution i have 5 MB Only and the Quality is Fantastic ,
this is youtube file and click HQ To see the size
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHslo...eature=channel
and this is the same file after i Encode it
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ymwjzizkayg
and I am working to make that only 2 MB Only Now , this is will save a lot $ ,
I don't think Bandwidth Will get cheaper in the near future , so I think the videos must be smallest ,

And what codec do you use to recompress? It has to be flash in order to be playable by all browsers on all platforms.
