    Question Dedicated upgrade question

    Hi Folks

    First post here..... Howdy!!

    Looking at dedicated upgrade suggestions.
Based on these two configurations what difference in performance would we likely see.
This is for a med-large VB forum pulling 500GB month bandwidth currently. Hopefully more soon LOL

    Hi Tim,

I personally configure servers with RAID for peace of mind. I'd go with option #2. If your forum is busy you don't necessarily need to throw more processing power at it. A memory web accelerator can take the load off quite substantially.

    Second option is better.
    It keeps space for growth.
I would still prefer more RAM!
Softaculous - Auto Installer for cPanel, Direct Admin, InterWorx, Plesk, H-Sphere
The only Auto Installer that installs 260+ scripts. Install in just ONE STEP!
Virtualizor - VPS Control Panel supporting OpenVZ, Xen, KVM and has 60+ OS Templates
Webuzo - Softaculous for the Cloud i.e. Softaculous Standalone

You are running VB, this is a application with lots and lots of mysql records, so you need to focus on the mem size (8gb ram?), and disk speed not the size (SCSI / SAS, not SATA / IDE)!

    Maybe this is better:

CPU: Core 2 Duo 2.6 ghz
    MEM: 4x 2GB
    HDD: 4x 300GB Ultra320 SCSI

    Greets.

Thank you very much for the input!
I was not sure on the VB demands, thus the reason for asking.

    More memory and SCSI

    Any other suggestions greatly welcome

Doubling the RAM is a good idea, and you should go with it, and see if you need more after this upgrade. Setting up 3 SATA drives in RAID-5 or 4 in RAID-10 will offer a large speed increase over your current setup, and will probably leave you without I/O troubles for a while.
