Looking for 5 VPSes around the world

    Hi there,

    I'm looking for 5 VPSes:

    1 - West coast US
    1 - Dallas/Chicago
    1 - East coast US
    1 - Asia [Singapore/Hong Kong/Japan]
    1 - Europe [London/Paris/Amsterdam/Frankfurt]

I was wondering if people could recommend hosts in the areas they know. I'm looking for:

    * The smallest VPS possible.
    * A single IP.
    * No control panel, or anything else -- I just want a bare Linux install.
    * Good reliability/network/company.
    * Tiny amount of bandwidth included is fine.
    * 128 or 256MB of RAM is fine.
    * Tiny amount of disk space is fine.
    * Hopefully something at $20USD/m or less per VPS.

    Thanks!

    Regards,
    Patrick

Also, any preference in which virtualisation technology? VZ, Xen, KVM? Or whatever works as long as it's within budget?

Doesn't really matter... but if I had to choose, I'd put Xen/KVM before VZ.

Well, there are quite a few providers for Asia which you can take your pick from, but are mainly in SG/HK. I don't recall seeing JP providers advertising their services in here, but I've not been here that long.

Some companies can provide all of the above for a bulk price through partnerships, if you were looking to work with a company in person. I've seen several working for people on the boards, possibly the offers area.

As far as your usual hosts, iwebfusion.net for west coast and buzzservers.com for central have been great.

Our own DNS + monitoring network, yup.

I wish I could find a single provider that did all (or at least all -Asia) of those locations so I can get one bill a month.

Check http://www.odishahosting.in I think they offer VPS located at multiple locations.

BTW if you will visit VPS Offers Forum, you may be able to get what you need but from different providers.

Also I will suggest remove one from USA and replace it with one from Australia.

    Hey Vinayak,

Yeah, I know about the VPS offers section -- but there's really no way to tell which provider is actually worth using -- everyone's the best!

It's kind of like, find some big names, do a search, see if they don't suck, and buy.

Sometimes the WHT search kind of sucks though, so doing searches for 'vps.net' or something doesn't give back any results.

Anyway... some good replies here. Thanks guys!

    Fine

    Have a look at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=893432
From them you can get VPS from Atlanta, Texas & LA. Communicate with Vlada or Rus if they are taking orders for UK too. People will tell you to stay away from them, but I had been dealing with Rus and the crew since 2003 and still have multiple VPS from them, just to inform Rus is among the first ones to offer VPS.

In case they are not taking orders for UK yet, try it from Future Hosting or from RapidSwitch, RS have their own DC.

For India as I said, http://www.odishahosting.in or http://www.webwerks.in

Though for Asia, Singapore will suit you more so boonchuan a retired mod here offers them have a look http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=894405 another SG provider (I don't know much about them) http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=895517

well, hard to find provider to give you 1 bill for so many locations. I would like to be on the same boat if there is such provider.

Here's what I've got so far, based on reading a crapload of reviews:

    LAX - arpnetworks.com
    DFW - slicehost.com
    JFK - ?
    LHR - rapidswitch.com
    NRT - digitalswift.net
    SYD - ?

If someone could recommend NYC or Sydney VPS hosts, that would be great.

I used a vps from VPSLink before, and it's quite good. VPSLink have data centers in Seattle and New York.
If you are looking for some cheap vps, take a look at lowendbox. You can find a lot of information there.

In the US you might want to consider Linode, they have facilities in the following locations:
    Newark, NJ
    Atlanta, GA
    Dallas, TX
    Fremont, CA

In their Fremont location, they are single-homed to HE, which IMO is a bad idea.

I've had a VPS with Linode out of Fremont for several months now as a monitoring location and also some internal redundancy stuff and it has been quite stable.

If HE is down suddenly, the whole location will be down. Linode is a very stable provider, but the single point of failure is HE itself.

Hurricane Electric operates its own international Internet backbone, with a redundant network topography and many peering relationships with other providers.

    http://www.he.net/about_network.html

    That's a far cry from being single-homed.

  28. #28
    Single provider = single-homed, period.

If they have problems with the uplink, problems with a switch, problems with forwarding traffic, problems with a BGP session, problems with power, you name it, the network will feel it.

Note, it is not HE that is single-homed, but it is Linode that is single-homed if they only have 1 uplink (HE) out of Fremont. If they have two or more independent providers (uplinks), they are multi-homed.

I have an AU vps with http://www.hostmyserver.com.au/
and am very happy with it.

Note however that because of its location, it has fairly limited bandwidth (I am using it to host a DNS server)

Apparently, you have not tried setting up a VPS before. If it is just purely setting up a server with no hardening, optimisation and tweaks, it is of course as easy as ABC, and many can set it up automatically. As Linode is an unmanaged provider, I believe their VPS offerings are setup automatically, without anything installed except for OS etc.

A good provider would simply harden a fresh template and then create another template out of the hardened OS.
So indeed, setting up a hardened VPS IS indeed as simple as ABC.

Setup fees are simply a method by providers to tie users down.
