Seems there is a major shortage of 8GB DIMMs.
I can't find any 1066 or 1333 anywhere, I need 130 sticks but can't even find smaller amounts

the words are that Kingston won't have KVR1333 back in stock till end of Jan the earliest. Kingston should resume shipping KVR1066 in next couple of days.

    ETA is 2/3 for 1333, 2/7 for 1066

I guess that's what you were implying, but I just want to make it clear that CAS latency is expressed in clock ticks:
    1333 CL9 = 6.75 ns
    1066 CL7 = 6.57 ns
    800 CL6 = 7.5 ns

So you're losing bandwidth but not gaining any measurable latency, making it a net loss -- whether it has any real-world impact is another question altogether, of course...

I thought the cas latency was in terms of cpu clock ticks, not "ram" clock ticks?

Probably why prices were so high before, because at these prices, there would be a shortage, especially if it was the first time people were seeing these prices.

No, they're in terms of RAM ticks. The CAS latency is a consequence of the design of the RAM chips and controllers, and it doesn't really matter whether you're using a 1 GHz or 5 GHz CPU: the RAM will still need the exact same time to respond.

But actually the figures I gave were wrong, since CAS latencies are given in "clock ticks" (667 MHz for DDR3-1333) instead of "transfer ticks" (1333 MHz for DDR3-1333). You have to multiply the latencies I gave by 2 to get the correct figures (unfortunately I don't have the rights to edit my post to fix it...)

Be sure to enable the option in BIOS to work with 'incompatible' (in otherwords, non-ECC) RAM. You might have to upgrade to latest BIOS to see that option.

Thank you. But how do I do that with no working memory?

    I have KVR1333D3D8R9S/2GI (2GB PC3-10667R reg x8 ECC CL9) modules - which also don't work.

    Good point!

Sometimes, using 1 RAM stick instead of two may help.
As I mentioned earlier, I have had problems with Kingston RAM in Supermicro servers. Now, I only buy RAM direct from Supermicro.

No, I'm not really sure. This is my first X8SIL-F. We use dozens of other Supermicro boards, most with Xeon CPUs. I never had any issues with memory modules on supermicro before. So I'm baffled.

Maybe the i3-550 CPU would need a firmware upgrade? But the board is brand new. and it's PCB version 1.02 - heard about issues with earlier versions.

When I power on the system, I only hear a continuous high pitched beep. When I remove the memory modules and power on again, I hear a more familiar beep, peep, beep, like on most other boards with no memory or graphics card.

I tried with 1, 2 and 4 modules. No difference.

Supermicro's first response to my problem report was "Sound like memory compatibility issue , please review our test memory list".

it's pretty simple actually! as long as you put core i3 on X8SIL(-F) board, you must use ECC unbuffered modules such as KVR1333D3E9S/4G or KVR1333D3E9S/2G.

    KVR1333D3N9/2G (non-ECC) and KVR1333D3D8R9S/2GI (ECC registered) are both big no-no for core i3 + X8SIL combo.

Ah, it's the CPU to blame. I only used X34xx.

    Thanks!

I just ordered two pieses. Hope, I don't have to pile them up like the others... :-|

FYI: this should become a tiny ESXi server for home offices. It's needed to fullfill the high requirements for firewalling and VPN of the mother company (a major bank in Europe), that won't allow a simple Netgear or Cisco router+firewall. The last solutions like that were made based on the Supermicro X7SPA-HF. But the Atom processor is so slow, I decided that we have to go up one step - because it's me who has to suffer from the slow speed, when I set up ESXi and the VMs. When It's ready, the user has appropriate speed for his DSL line. That's why there's only an i3 in the board and why I need a Micro-ATX or ITX board for that application.

or you could just upgrade the i3 to an i5, then you can use the kingston RAM you already have...

I did that - and it worked! Great!

However, after powering on the system it said

WARNING: These Memory DIMMs are NOT supported!!!
WARNING: This CPU is NOT supported!!!

    Now what?

EDIT: and it's not really booting somewhere but crashing with wild characters (should boot from PXE into a memory test):

EDIT2: after attaching some SATA drives it's now booting properly. Memory test is running. Crazy!!!

any of these conditions will "trigger" that error message:
    any non-Xeon CPU except i3, namely i5 or i7
    any non-ECC RAM for i5/i7/Xeon
any ECC registered RAM if i5/i7 is installed

to rid off the error message, just enter BIOS, then disable "CPU/RAM check".

    Hello,

since a few days i used two of these modules (KVR1066D3Q8R7S/8G) without any problems. First i test them with memtest86+.

maybe i will order two more to get total 32GB

    regards

is the i3 going to work at all with the 1.01 PCB with the latest bios or should I not bother trying?

got i3 working with X8SIE-F, so i think X8SIL-F and i3 will be fine.

16G (2x 8G) kit is well under $300 at the moment.
