Question Sync a cpanel server with a standard bind server

Well these are 2 questions in fact, the first is well, i have 2 servers with bind both, but one is a standard debian lenny with bind9 and the other is a cpanel one (w centos 5.3), the thing is i want to use debian as primary dns and cpanel as secondary. Is that possible? (any special steps to be done are welcome)

The second is that if i have my dns servers, which are not cpanel just standard linux boxes with bind, to make a cpanel server to use them as dns resolvers i just edit the resolv.conf (or the section in cpanel) and it should work? no extra steps necessary?

    Thank you for you answers.

I believe this is something that cPanel actually support. I'm not personally too familiar with cPanel, but we have a customer with a script that seems to be straight from cPanel which allows for "clustered" DNS. Though, don't quote me on that

cPanel DNSONLY is essentially a stripped down version of cPanel/WHM. This means that DNSONLY only supports the same operating systems as cPanel/WHM. At this time, Debian distributions are not currently supported by cPanel/WHM.

    Hi,

cPanel's DNSOnly is free and would probably be the best option if your just want cPanel on it.

You could also just hack together a script that reads the /etc/bind.conf, yanks a list of zones, and generates the required slave zone declarations on the regular server.
Common sense is not so common.

Yes just edit resolv.conf and add nameserver <ip of bind server>
    It will work.

It should work provided DNS recursion is On in your BIND name server setup. I suggest to lock down DNS and only allow recursion from the IP address/range of your cPanel server.

You need to reload bind/named service. The script for reloading named/bind should be in /etc/init.d/named reload or /etc/init.d/bind reload

Directly query the nameservers IP using dig,

If the IP address the nameserver is listening on is 192.168.1.2 then,

    dig @192.168.1.2 mydomain.com
