Amazon cloud ddos'd and wants to keep it mum

Now, I have been specifically advised not to say what the problem was, but I believe we owe it to our customers to explain what went wrong. Also, we owe it to Amazon to clear it up, since they were looking pretty bad due to this.

I believe that guy is rather nice to amazon, this is the reason we no longer use them for anything and migrate everything from the EC2 platform when needed.

When there is an issue with the platform, not only do you have to pay to speak to someone in support you have to speak to the front level and go through a very, very tedious process before they finally set you up in a conference with the actual EC2 engineers.

I recall going on for WEEKS with the same reoccurring issues and having to spend hours and hours on the phone with the same guys explaining the same things over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over (get the idea?) before finally being escalated.

Then when they finally are ready to admit there is a problem with their platform they won't do so until you sign an NDA.

Very tedious but I could live with that, what really bugs me is when instances completely disappear due to a hardware failure on the node it was on but you have no way to know this, so you take out a support contract and ask them what is wrong with it to get told "It's a hardware failure on the node, the instance won't be returning". Not having any way to inform you what is going on with your instances without having to pay for their ridiculous support contracts is infuriating. Especially when you are not only paying for the base support contract you are also paying extra per machine hour once you over a specific number of machine hours (Essentially once you would be considered "big").

Amazon is worthless. I have to agree with everything Scott said.

Could be worse, can you imagine if you had to deal with paypal or google support? Boilerplate email responses that you pay for under a support contract.

The NDA is really a stretch. Talk about protecting the image of invincibility. They've sold the cloud "concept" to web 2.0 types and when it keels over like a polished turd, they don't want to spoil the shine on the apple that attracts the eyes of other web 2.0 types.

This really ought to be a sticky people can point to the next time some neophyte starts going "ooh and aah" over cloud computing. Maybe it'll uncloud their judgement.

I'd call it duct tape computing, but that would disgrace time honoured old school practices.

Turd computing has a certain ring to it though.

With all the negativity that surrounds cloud computing what are specific features that draw companies into the cloud that would be worth the risk?

There is clearly no such thing as a DDoS immunity no matter what service you buy.

Very true. I think that larger companies, given their name exposure, are more likely to be the target of DDOS attacks, however they are also better prepared (given their resources) to detect and respond to them.

In the short term I think we will see even more DDOS attacks against cloud hosting companies. It will be interesting to see how each of them responds.
