So for a few days now my VPS with 1and1 has been acting weird. It has been pegged, but only the kernel, causing the administration plesk area to come up with the 500 error code. When reviewing my VPS I have plenty of memory, plenty of space, and my sites are not peeking with users, and my email isn't peeking (nothing sending out, nothing but regular stuff coming in).
When I call 1and1 they say that my kernel is pegging out, and that the only option is to upgrade to their dedicated servers. Ironically, their servers are now on sale 50% off and have been for about a month. After further investigation my server has been jumping from the Green Zone to the Yellow and Black Zone for the past month on a constant basis when I look in the QoS Alerts in Virtuozzo.
They say that the kernel is being pegged by others on my VPS, yet I've been on this VPS for over a year and never experienced ANY problems.
What is the deal going on here? A company being greedy and wanting me to upgrade for their benefit? (their 2 cheap servers are sold out, so I'd be forced to go from a VPS of $59.99/mo to a $99.99/mo for 6 months then to a $149.99/after 6 months), or a kernel problem and what can I do to solve the issue?
Stay away from 1&1 like a disease! They have OC-36 Connection, and they are the worst oversellers in existance, on shared hosting, it takes 5 seconds to process the page and 4 seconds (total 9 seconds everywhere I've tested it) to communicate with the client. They may have millions of customers, but they dump them all in this little nook of the earth known as their datacentre.
Go away, anywhere but 1&1! And they overcharge WAY too much for what they are offering.
I've had a $60 liquid web VPS for ages, never had a single issue, now have two of them... There are some discounts available in the forums here as well. I realize that it has much lower advertised specifications than your current plan, but from the sounds of it I'm still better off
Liquid Web VPS Customer for years --- Worth every extra penny spent.
Does anyone know if 1and1.com still uses DHCP on their dedicated servers?
I recently worked on a server for a client thats at 1and1.co.uk in their German Datacenter and they still use DHCP. I remember in the past their DHCP server would go down, not to mention the fact that its not a good idea to use DHCP in a public hosting environment.
I also agree, find another host, theres plenty of good ones here on WHT.

That's not the case as far as I've experienced it.

Well, it it's over your head, look for a talented admin to help you sort it out. A one time payment may be more cost effective than a permanent upgrade, if it can save you from upgrading. With so many providers out there though, it may actually be most cost effective to just change providers and hope it is all not the fault of your usage/sites, but the fault of their system.

I may be the naive type, but I doubt that this is an actual up-selling policy on their part.

Only using LW for something like 4 months, but no problems thus far.
