You would need 400 dual core cpus to handle that. That tops anything Ive seen.

I was going to mention that at this point you should hold your hand in front of you and shout "oh no, she wont hold!" but it seems long past that stage

I think it is because I asked the people who are running the sites to remove the images, I sent them all a email with the top screen shot, and they did nothing. One replied back with a really stupid answer.

Well id like to go with litespeed but I can't really afford it at the moment, even then I don't think it would have really mattered with the number of requests I was getting.

Don't run any kind of file or image hosting on Apache. That really isn't a smart thing to do. Use something like nginx or lighttpd instead.

I personally prefer nginx and use it to host over 10 million hits (approximately) on each of my servers (currently 2) daily. This easily allows me to max out the 100Mbps connection the servers have.

Oh and Chinese porn sucks, I know

Out of all the non-English speaking countries in the world the Chinese have the hardest time reading my TOS it seems

Even with that many CPU's you'd still have exactly the same load, because this issue totally isn't CPU related.

Many hits = Many Apache process = Huge RAM usage = Lots of swapping if you don't have enough RAM.

nginx on the other hand uses only a few megabytes of RAM even with tons of connections of open. For dynamic content like PHP you can use it as a frontend proxy to Apache.

I haven't had a problem with Apache and a file/image hosting site for the past year and a half, getting ~200,000 downloads per day.

GHDpro what are specs of your server that handle 10 million hits?

Core2Duo, 8GB RAM, no RAID (plain SATA drives). Most of the RAM is used as file cache. Iowait is still pretty high because not everything fits into this file cache (~9 million files uploaded since fall 2007, ~25K new files daily).

To be honest, the current two servers are overloaded and can't handle the load well at peak times, but this is mainly a bandwidth issue (average 83Mbps used on one of the two) and some bad design decisions (for scalability) I intend to fix someday. I got a third server this weekend (finally) to spread the load a bit.

Still it is very impressive that you can handle that with core2duo, I handle my sites with quad 4GB of ram (using 1GB) ~3.5mil. hits per day and load is around 25-50%.
Web server LiteSpeed, but my pages are more complicated and dynamic.

Was thinking of doing that, but they never made the images click able. They were just embedded, not linked and as far as I know I can't change that with htaccess.

That would kind of defeat the purpose of an image hosting service, wouldn't it?

I have seen server loads go to 1200+ just last week. Still sites were loading fine & RAM usage was near 60%.
