    server hardware requirements?

Hello everyone, I am a complete noob My question is that i would need to know what are the hardware requirements for a (dedicated) server that is running a discussion forum with up to 500 users online at the same time. Just the cpu, RAM etc. Bandwidth is not an issue.

Also about the software, what other do i need than vbulletin and MySql database? Its going to be just a basic discussion forum, nothing extra.

Brief answers are okay, nothing too fancy

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english, its not my first language.

A dual core server with at least 2-4 GB memory would be sufficient. These days most companies give about 1 TB data by default with the server, which should be more than enough.

Maybe it's a good idea taking a simple control panel with the server (f.e Directadmin, Cpanel, Plesk) for easily managing your website and creating email accounts.

If you are just going to start your Discussion forum I would recommend starting with Shared hosting or a VPS.

I dont think you will need a dedicated server from the very begining.

I agree with mathewanson somewhat. For a forum of that size you wont necessarily need a dedicated server. Although having a dedicated server has many advantages.

If you do choose to go with a dedicated server, go with a small dual core with 2 GB of ram. HDD probably doesn't matter to much as most companies will offer more than you could fill with just a forum.

If your forum has increasing traffic, then i believe you should consider a Dual Core with 2GB - 4GB RAM

Or maybe go with some VPS cloud so you can upgrade your VPS with more memory and CPU power while you are growing. There are many options for you
