What brand would you buy?
I currently have an HP notebook that's 2 years old. I'm running Win 7 RC on it. Now that I've seen my moms new HP notebook I'm thinking about upgrading this fall. If you were to buy a notebook today what brand would you go with? Why? I own a Dell desktop and it's been pretty good to me.
Thanks for your feedback!

I have had a HP unit at home for seven years. However, at work two years ago I was given a thinkpad t61 to use. I liked it right from the start. It was much faster. Since my purchase of the thinkpad, I have been very pleased. Hopefully, after several years of ownership, I will be able to express this same experience.

I've just never been impressed with the look of the Thinkpads. I know performance is most important. But I've always liked the looks of the HP notebook and with Dell the color options. I'm a creative person so I like creative products if that makes sense. Thanks your your feedback though. I'll keep it in mind though.

I just ordered a Thinkpad but if you don't like the business-type style, then it's probably not a good choice. What size screen are you looking for? That narrows down your choices for you.

I have a 15.4" right now but my mom went with a 13" which I like. I just want something a little more portable with beefed up speed and memory. What kind of price did you get on the Thinkpad? She works for HP so basically got almost fully loaded for about $700. I would probably go for the better graphic card and a faster processor.

Not a bad looking notebook. I'll consider that when I'm ready to pull the trigger. Right now I have to build my hosting business and pay some bills. I'm looking at the HP Pavilion dv3t series in the Midnight White. I'm running Win7 RC right now so I'll probably wait until the new Win 7 notebooks are ready.

I currently have an ASUS netbook for when a travel, its a good mini machine.
My main laptop is a HP cant go wrong with HP.
I never shop with a brand in mind i always compare spec vs prices, hence iam not a brand loyalist.
Cheers

Love Geeks! I've bought from them several times and always had a good experience. I used to work for Best Buy and I would suggest the Gateway notebooks. I saw the ASUS netbook at Costco the other day. Might want one. Should be interesting to see what kind of Black Friday deals we'll see on netbooks.
Yeah when my mom has worked for a company - HP for 30 years I'm kind of loyal to the brand.

That's a great looking notebook and I love the 13.3" form factor.
I personally prefer the build quality, reliability and support of business class laptops. The Lenovo ThinkPad's are very popular but I find the Dell Latitude's are just as good and cheaperWhat's your budget?
Seriously, what's your budget?

I am disappointed in the quality of HP laptops these days. They come with much more bloatware and I've had more issues with it. I'm leaning towards Dell or Sony at the moment for laptops/desktops or Asus for netbooks.

It all comes down what are you going to use it for.
Just bought a 16.4" Sony Vaio FW series. Also have an HP Pavillion dv9700.
Website/Logo design is part of my job, so I have to favor Sony for it's screen quality and high ppi (134), over HP (<100 ppi).

Thinkpads are very good laptops. IBM (now Lenovo) has done a great job.

I bought an Apple macbook 3 years back. Great laptop that has many benefits, very solidly built and still going great to this day. Although the plastic has become very marked and scratched, despite being in a protective case inside a bag all the time!
Last year, a Dell XPS 15 (was previously discontinued but back on the Dell site in various promotions recently). The cheap Dell stuff is horrible, however, I've been really impressed with the Dell XPS build quality. Studio has a very similar design but using more plastic, from what I've seen in shops they seem well put together.
Last year, also bought a Sony laptop for a relative. Good build quality again, it's been abused for the past year and thrown about, and still going strong (I've always been worried about the Sony Vaio fail rate...).
This year, Acer Aspire One, a fairly decent netbook for a low price which really surprised me. However, a couple of months ago I decided a netbook wasn't for me and replaced it with a HP dv2, which while uses a bit too much plastic, is still pretty well built and has survived some trips abroad already.
In all cases, the OS was pretty much wiped to get rid of the rubbish pre-installed on it. All of them, from memory, were pretty bad (except Apple).
With all the brand experience, I'd honestly buy any of them again (although that might change if I ever have to call their technical support line). Bloatware can be resolved fairly easily - so I'd look at the hardware and build quality inside. Pretty much every manufacturer will have some cheap rubbish and the better built stuff. You really need to decide exactly what it is you want a laptop for, and then evaluate different models that match from different companies. The brand is, to many extents, irrelevant as everything will vary model to model.Alasdair

I completely agree. My parents just bought a HP desktop for the house and all of the extra garbage software they put on it made it much slower than it should be. It's also very annoying. I would recommend getting an Asus. They are supposed to be just as good as MacBook's, quality wise.

I have a Dell laptop, never had any problems with it, mine has a little over a gig of memory and it is more than enough for me, I use it everyday for doing my home work and I save and download a ton of stuff and still have a lot of memory left.

Chalk up another one for Thinkpads. You may not like the design, but from a durability perspective, they absolutely rock. Great keyboard, I personally like the design, and you can take them through absolute hell and they'll come out fine. I've owned a 600X for a good while and, despite what that thing's been through across the years, it still works like a champ; I just don't use it anymore due to the P3-450. You can watch grass grow while it loads a modern webpage.
If you're price-conscious, look at a Dell. I own a Studio 15 and it works great. Doesn't feel very sturdy though. Next in line is HP, I liked the dv6 series (own and use a dv6000, *very* sturdy), just be prepared to wipe the drive and install your own OS mix, as the stuff they load it with is atrocious (be sure to make the backup DVDs before you wipe).
Design-wise, if all I wanted in a laptop was looks and price wasn't a concern, I'd probably go for an HP or a Mac.

I would personally buy a Samsung Laptop.
You need to pay a little more for Dells these days to get a decent laptop. The Dell Studio's are quite nice, although a little more expensive than the Samsungs.
The lower end Dell Inspiron laptops are horrible cheap things.
