Post Looking for low cost reseller to form long-term relationship.

    Hey there,

I've been a web designer and developer for several years now, and it's come to the point that my account with my current host isn't adequate enough. I need something that can start out low, scale as its needed, and has a team behind it that can support the services they offer.

I have a lot of clients who would love to be on a box with me managing, so it's about time I provide that.

My business will be long term, paid for accordingly. So please, help me find a host who can suit my needs:

    Requirements:
    • $30/mo or less for lowest reseller package.
    • Must be able to upgrade packages when needed.
    • Must be at least 20GB of reselling space with proportional bandwidth.
    • Must allow some overselling. (Talking about 20% of package size.)
    • Must be running on Linux boxes.
    • Must support Apache/PHP/MySQL
    • Must NOT allow adult or pornographic content within the service.
    • Must have been established for at least six months. (Or less with reputable testimonials.)
    • Must have phone support and ticketing support.
    • Must NOT allow ffmpeg.
    • Must offer affordable dedicated boxes in case that time comes.
    • Must have a proven 98% or higher up time guarantee.
    • Must offer cPanel reselling with WHM

Extras (not required, will help win me over though):
    • Free WHMCS or ClientExec
    • Free setup

So, any ideas? Thoughts? I'm looking to close the deal by this coming Wednesday.

    Ryan,

I think there are plenty of companies out there offering you the above; only thing i would be careful with the overselling part; when the hosting company itself does not oversell it could be completely harmless but if the company does oversell itself as well you might get in more trouble as you like.

Other as that i believe your requirements are quite common, what i did not see in your post is the location you are looking for i.e. USA or Europe.

How much space and bandwidth will you actually be using? You should have no problems finding a reseller to meet those requirements. Most hosts do not allow adult content, and FFMPEG, and will let you upgrade for free when the time comes. Of course if you're unsure about what a host allows, you can always contact them and ask. It's best to get the info straight from the host.

$19 for 25GB, I've used them before, pretty good.

Your budget seems to be reasonable enough for you to find exactly what you've listed above. Apache, mySQL, and PHP are usually standard now for Linux hosting environments. Many reseller providers also offer free billing systems like ClientExec or WHMCS. Do you know how much bandwidth you'll need?

    A couple of thoughts:

If you're only planning on overselling 20% or so you might actually be better off with a no-overselling allowed plan, since they tend to come with a much larger quotas (perhaps 50 to 100% more) than the overselling-allowed plans.

Must have a proven 98% or higher up time guarantee.
98% uptime is a very poor standard - IMO totally unacceptable, and uptime guarantees are worthless anyway. Instead I'd suggest you look for proven uptime of at least 99.5% (preferably 99.8%+) over six months or more.

    Good luck with your search.

I agree. Even 99.5% is considered as not good uptime.

Must have been established for at least six months. (Or less with reputable testimonials.)
If you're going to rely on the hosting provider to help you grow a hosting business you want them to have experience. That typically means you want them to have a 1-2 years experience themselves. It often takes that long for the cracks in their business model to become apparent.

There would be only one small exception, and that is a hosting company owned by someone who has previously built a successful hosting business before. They are likely enough to know what they are doing, and they're probably better at it than they were the first time around.

98% uptime is a very poor standard
Most definitely agreed. 98% uptime is about 14 hours of downtime a month. That's definitely going to cause complaints from customers, even not-so-picky ones that don't really monitor their site's uptime.

    Hi

    Your requirements are very reasonable.

Do you have an idea of where you would like your host to be based? ie UK/US etc.

Have you looked at the Reseller Offers forums at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=130

+1 for the Reseller Forum: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=130

You should have no trouble at all on this one, also Hawkhost comes to mind, though I have no personal experience with them.
