What's the catch of this one?

    http://www.hivelocity.net/dedicated-...te-VPS-servers

It's a super cheap vps package (which I believe is unmanaged, but still too much a bargain) from a relatively well known dedicated hosting provider. I'm not quite tech oriented, so it's pretty shocking to have a 256MB VPS for just $8 a month.

Do you think it's a good idea to go with this plan? What is OpenVZ? Is it any good?

Well OpenVZ is a OS virtualization technique (see wiki.openvz.org) but it does not come with advanced front end management interface. You should ask the web host whether they provide one or not. I don;t see a web hostign automation software (control panel) in the offering. You don't need one if you are good enough in server administration, but do you?

Hmm, I know you are right. But I've been managing stuff myself at linode for a while now, after creating and configuring the initial distro myself alone by the help of detailed docs of theirs, so I guess I should be able to survive this.

But $8 is a little bit shocking for even totally unmanaged VPS, considering 150GB transfer and 256MB RAM. If they can keep up the uptime promise, it'd be the best VPS deal ever.

I decided to give it a try. Will keep you updated. It's just $8 anyway.

Not enough memory to do what? There are many things you can not not with 256MB but there are still a ton of things that you can do. You just have to be realistic about how you use it. I have a number of 256 and 128MB VPS that are doing multiple things for me just fine and dandy.

I think is a great offer... the catch, i think, is openvps because you don't have a control panel.

    The Catch? Well, many.

    1. It runs on 10Mbps port.
    2. It doesn't have a Bandwidth Monitor tool
    3. It doesn't have a Panel. You will ask the support dept. if you want to reload, restart or shut down.
    4. You must pay if you want to do an OS reload.
    5. Support Team is BAD. actually they don't really care for their $8 VPS customers.
