    Cheap 4x1Tb backup server? <$200

Looking for a cheap 4x1TB backup server with Raid, or roughly 3TB usable disk... It'll mostly be long term data store.. so I don't need that much bandwidth.

NOT in the Los Angles area.

Any ideas on where to look?

Please, don't suggest Amazon ($450 /month) or similar pricey services.

If you don't have large CPU or memory requirements this should be an easy solution to find.

What are your expectations in terms of CPU/Memory?

Your going to have a hard time getting it with RAID... for under $200.

I honestly can not see how that will be hard to get under $200?

If he wants dual cpu or 8 gb with it, maybe tougher... but heck, 4 1tb drives, sw raid, a single dual core cpu and 2 or 4gb ram should be easily doable with his budget.

If he wants S/W raid he shouldn't have a problem, but with h/w raid he'll have a problem.

    What type of RAID solution?
    What processor core?

Also, if this is long term, get the right hardware... it will pay off, I assure you. $200 isn't a bad mark. You should be able to find something.

Though, you may want to consider most providers that lease monthly services, charge between 20 and 50 dollars per month per 1TB HDD, to guarantee their hardware and maintain stock.

Thanks for the recommendation, unfortunately though I cannot provide such a server for under $200. Hardware raid sorta makes the price a bit high.

One thing you could do though is maybe split it up onto 2 separate servers?

Your price is possible if you are only willing to pay for the setup fee otherwise, it would be hard with your budget.

Xeon 3050 Dual Core 4gb ram Hardware Raid 4x1.0TB Sata2 drives, 2tb bandwidth is $359.00/mo at SoftLayer with the "Yipp" promotion code.

I don't think you're going to find this at a quality provider for much less than that.

Jaguarpc has some cheap machines. I think 1 is like 8 hard drives for 350 a month. There should be one plan listed that has 4hds. Talk to sales and they should be able to provide you with a lower end server.Although does location really matter if your just doing backups?

Agreed....should be able to be obtained at that price at some of the budget providers, but doubtful are premium/medium price level providers.

Correct, webnx is great, but I'm trying to do an offsite backup.

Nocster does offer +$25 / 1TB drive and HW raid, so that would be an option.

Ok I'll suggest going to HoneLive. I checked myself and they have something available in your price range. I have a server with them and it's awesome. HNLV is his username here on the forums so you can PM that and probably get ahold of him.

    You could use hetzner.de
Their EQ4 Server combined with the FlexiPack and the following options:
    EQ4 Server for 49 Euro/month
    FlexiPack for 15 Euro/month
1500GB Harddisks instead of 750GB for 10 Euro per Disk and month
Two additional 1500GB Harddisks for 20 Euro per Disk and month
    ------------
    124 Euro/month with 4* 1500GB Harddisks
If you're outside EU, you don't have to pay the 19% taxes, so your price will be really low

If you want to have HW-Raid, you can rent an 4-Port Controller for additional 25 Euro/month, still very cheap Server with much space and good performance.

If you are using it for longterm backup have you considered colocation? While generally not worth it for single servers with something like this and how cheap drives are it might be worth it.

I've looked into colo before, but the bandwidth + HW always seems to kill any deal. At best, I've seen payoff in maybe 2 years, which is about my limit on hardware anyway. It'd have to be substantially less for me to go through that trouble.

I am open to multiple servers, which is what I have now... I just wish more places offered reasonable disk prices..

Check out FDC, they may be able to give you a custom quote for that with a setup fee for the HDs.

I would suggest contacting FDC or Burst.

You can buy yourself maybe your own server. You don't need it to be powerful since it will be used only for backup. Then you can colocate it at FDC or Joe's (they are the cheapest colo ive seen for single server)
