Is 1 Amp enough for this server?

    I have an IBM X336 with 2x3.4 Xeon, 2 SATA HDDs 7200 RPM, 8x2048 DDR2, RSA II, 2xPower Supply.

Here are the Power calculations from an IBM tool:

What is the exact model of the CPU's?
Either way, I think you will be over 1AMP but should be under 2AMP.

At what voltage? According to that screen shot, the server uses quite a bit of power..

Yes but that number is retarded for a 1U server!

    And they are Xeon 3.4/2M/800

I suspect your looking at an idle of around 1.2-1.3amps!

    Thats insane...

You'll be around 2 AMPs 120VAC at idle, and closer to 2.75 under load. Those Xeons are rated at 110W TDP each, plus 16GB of memory...

    2x Irwindales at 110W each + 16GB ram 30W+ 2x SATA at 10W each + chipset 20W = 300W load roughly

Assuming 70% efficient power supply since this server was before the 80plus certification. You are talking about nearly 3.0-3.2A at 120V full load.

Might as well get a single socket lynnfield Xeon X3440 to colocate at this point.

That hardware could easily be in the 3A range @ 120V under load. I'd be pretty surprised if you could run that at 1A even idle.

Wonderful. So basically colo with this server will be insanely expensive and not worth it?

  14. #14
You could probably find some place with an excess of power that could give you a decent rate. But your right, most places will charge you a premium for that amount of power.

You would probably pay $20/AMP (or something of the sort) over the 1.. so $40/month more. $480/year more, which would probably pay for the difference of a newer server which will be more powerful as well...

I've seen similar servers pulling 3-4 amps. 1A? No way!

The new mac mini uses only 15W while idling, and a low 34W while running a benchmark test. You could have 4 of them with a smaller power footprint.

Looks like the old systems , probably using 2amp spike when booting up then cooling down back to 1.6 or lower usage.

The max input power measured rated is 438Watts so at 220V, so the ampere works out to be 1.99A.

Rather then make a new thread i think it might just be better to ask here. Would 1 amp be enough to run this server or would i need 2? Its just running a email server and archiving software.

    Motherboard: Supermicro X7SBi (Pro)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9400 Thermal Design Power - 95W

    4 sata HD's
    4 GB DDR2 800
    1 300 watt Power Supply

    Thanks

I went out and bought a Kill-A-Watt. Hook up the box to this thing and it will tell you how many amps it uses. You can get them for 20 bucks online. (This way you are 100% sure what its using. No estimation needed..

I think this would easily use 2amps maybe 3amps under full load.

should be over 1amp under full load, but should be under 1.5amp
