Looking for someone to share a dedicated server with

Hey guys, new to the forums, not sure if this is the right place to post this. Lately I've been looking for someone to share a dedicated server with seeing as I wouldn't use it to its full potential if were just me.

Was just wondering if anybody has a dedicated server they wouldn't mind sharing or if they'd want to go half with me on a dedicated server. Have been looking at FDCServers latey and their 100mbit unmetered #2 server for $199. Since I'm new it's kind of hard to determine who's good and who's not, so many questionable reviews. All that I'd need is something with cPanel, have lots of experience with shared hosting but that's about it.

I'm in the states, work, responsible, and serious about getting one or sharing with somebody that already has one. If you're interested just send me a message on here or shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Thanks

You'd probably be better to just get a VPS of your own, rather than go through sharing a dedicated.

I understand you don't want to go the full cost of a dedicated server so depending on what you are wanting to do it maybe better for you to use a VPS as you have almost total control over it and if you share a dedicated server I have always seen people who are sharing a dedicated server 1 or the other will overload it and cause down times.

So the question is what is it that you are wanting to do?

Thanks for the replies. I wrote some software for eBay sellers to allow them to drag and drop images into the program and upload them into a gallery instantly to display their items. So I'm basically starting a image uploading site, it's in development now. Not sure how many resources sites like what I'm trying to do use, but I don't think a VPS would work. I also run a small site for a Yahoo! Game that hosts some software I wrote to make it easier for users to login (very small, probably gets like 30 hits a day). My buddy that runs a list of porn advertising websites has a few dedicated servers but I haven't heard from him in a few days so I'm looking elsewhere.

I've got the money and the cost of dedicated server isn't an issue, just not sure I'd use it to it's full potential and I think I'd hog the resources on a VPS. So I'm kind of in the middle.

As you have mentioned that you are not going to use the server to its full potential then why to go for a dedicated server and share it with an unknown person. It's good to have a VPS or Semi-Dedicated Server and later upgrade to Dedicated server as your requirement increases.

a VPS should be fine for you just starting out. Images do take a little more to run but a good vps should handle it. Just make sure you don't by a server that is overloaded. Or it will be sluggish.

I totally agree on this. Why not get yourself a good VPS? For $100 you will get a good VPS..

With $100 you can get a pretty nice ATOM Server.

I would say, you can go with a cheaper server from them or go with a VPS

Appreciate all the replies guys. I KNOW that I should just find a decent VPS and wait until I upgrade but I just feel like sharing a dedicated server with somebody. Though it'll be hard to find someone who doesn't hog the server, but I've got the cash and once I find that person I'll be satisfied. Thanks again for the replies.

Good luck in your search. You may want to try to make friends here on WHT and perhaps ask one of them to share a server with you. (Could be better than a relative stranger.)

One idea you might try is getting the host to load something like vmware esxi on the server for you, and split the server down the middle as far as processors, hard drive space, memory etc. This way you are also somewhat isolated from the other person you are splitting the sever with.

Interesting idea. Kind of like asking a host to turn a dedicated server into two semi-dedicated servers?

You got it, that way for instance, maybe one of them wants to run Windows and the other Linux. Or maybe one wants cpanel and the other doesn't. It would also be good for security reasons, maybe he has some files or custom programs he doesn't want the other person to have access to. Or if one of them tinkers around with the os and deletes something by accident both of them don't have an issue. If I was going to split a server with someone this is probably how I would do it.

I suggest you get a semi-dedicated server, which offer more CPU/RAM/Disk IO than a VPS. Wiredtree/JaguarPC and a few others have those.

I am so confused, instead of splitting a server why don't you get a server that is half as powerful which would probably also be half the cost...

Not sure if this is against the TOS or not; However, I work for a consulting company that just did a job in a datacenter with several servers, and they just decommisioned them for an upgrade to a Blade Enclosure. They didn't remove the old servers though.

When I was leaving, their Boss threw out the idea of leasing the remaining servers to someone.

If your interested I can put you in touch???
