What is the control panel going to be used for? If you want it for general admin, then i'd say WebMin.

Considering the OP has said that he already has a vps (as a client), I don't think he'll be wanting your VPS panel.

    To the OP:

If you're wanting free, and a general purpose control panel, i'd definitely go for webmin. It has plugins for almost everything and will help you keep on top of your updates etc.

I would recommend however, learning how to use Linux through the command line - when things don't go as expected then control panels can't generally help and you'll need to know what you're doing.

All this is making the assumption that you are using a Linux VPS!

I recommend Server CP from Zervex. I used it during long time and encountered not problems. Free, easy to install, unlimited domains, a lot of cool features, a forum for support etc.
