    Computer RAM question

    Hi Guys,
I've got a Dell PC that wrote in manual it's support DDR2 533/667 RAMs, so my question is is it possible to install DDR2 800Mhz on this PC? or I need to buy 533/667?
    Cheers

It's possible it would work, but not a definite thing. Have you tried speaking with Dell?

Yes faster memory is backward compatible as long as the type is same...but it will operate at the slower speed.

I would speak directly with a Dell Technical Support Representative before I done something like that. I'm not much of a hardware person so that stuff tends to 'scare' me, haha.

In most cases the faster ram will be backwards compatible, just check with the manufacturer to confirm. Or read the specs if available for your mainboard chipset.

Yeah it will be backwards compatible. The only issue is in most cases you wont be able to reach the full ram speed.

True, but in some cases I've seen deals on brand name higher rated ram. Might as well buy better if available. He may get a box that can use it to its full potential later. I've done that planning ahead for system upgrades.

Better buy in accordance with your rated figure which is 533/667.

I think he meant it won't operate at the higher frequency, which is true. As long as the pins are proper and it fits, should work fine just at 667Mhz.
    Nothing here right now.

Just skimmed through the posts and noticed no one mentioned that laptops aren't backward compatible with slower ram speeds (in most cases).

I know you said PC, but just incase it was a laptop, and for future knowledge you'll know that if it was a laptop, you'd need to make sure to get a compatible ram speed

And yes, on computers if you install higher speed ram, the motherboard will just slow it down to the maximum speed that it can utilize. (of course it must be the same dimm type )

I agree with MikeTrike. You can buy the same type of dimm with a higher speed and it will work. Higher speed rams are backwards compatible as mentioned in other posts. Sometimes you can find better deals on say 800mhz than 667mhz and the 800 still work in your pc. Just make sure that if your ram is DDR2, then you need to get DDR2.
