Thumbs down nac routing - now using cogent?!

Today I did a trace route on a domain hosted on a nac server. It was very different than I expected. Before I had only 11 hops and now I have 25! hops. Ping times went up about 15 ms.

The tracert reveals that cogent lines are used. Before I have seen lambda lines. Is this a temporary routing or is this for ever? I could not find any annoucement at nac.net.

PS I just switched server to get better ping and trace route results. Ping is still better, but the tracert is worse.

NAC has had cogent for a while...

    http://www.nac.net/networkmap.asp

In the map, they state the have two 100mbps line to Cogent.

    Nothing new...

Just wondering what ip/domain did you trace? It is quite likely it is dcjn.

We have offered Cogent bandwidth through our DCJN product for quite a while now. DCJN is essentially peer fortified Cogent bandwidth, where routes are prioritized with peers first, Cogent second. DCJN and NAC.NET bandwidth are NOT one and the same.

Yes but I have seen quite a few people advertise they have nac bw when infact it is dcjn.

sure, who wouldn't? it's a big pro, if you can advertise with "NAC bandwidth" as NAC has a good name ... so it's a real pro ...
    though it'd be false advertisement.

Last time I asked Nac what DCJN was they said DCJN is the name of their Washington DC Junction (thus DCJN) and it was just cogent bandwidth... I'll have to bug them to see if its "peer fortified or not"

It' s an voxtreme server. I assume it is DCJN. What' s the difference? I have read that the DCJN Datacenter is technically dead and uses the same prooviders as the main datacenter.

DCJN isn't a datacenter, its a peering point for NAC. I believe pegasus uses it in their network and are the only ones who use it in the Parsippany DataCenter right now... try tracing to <edit - Insert correct server name> maya.effectonline.com </edit> and see if you get cogent, its one of my boxes in NAC, its possible they could be playing with the routing a bit to mix cogent back in or pweb could just be switching to DCJN hard to say, but I know that I'm on direct NAC

heh it actually stands for something else. NAC does not have anything in DC they are pretty much east coast only. It is "peer fortified" bgp preferance is nac peers, cogent, nac.

Would you mind PMing me with the server you are on?

As the others have mentioned, DCJN is a selection of bandwidth available in NAC, not a different datacenter. Feel free to contact us with any of your concerns.

The DCJN is still very much alive & many machines currently use it. Basically its NAC bandwidth but without the direct transit providers, so your traffic only passes over of NAC peers (MAE-East / NYIIX). This is the network that pwebtechs new DedicatedNOW boxes will be placed on.

If you are on the regular network and god forbid your traffic passes over a DCJN router or on a cogent line, it's because that's the quickest route to your box.

From what I hear the name wouldn't do the network justice in a public forum

probably not though, ive tracerouted back and forth and am yet to see *any* cogent in dcjn.

dcjn network is great and I like the speed there, rarely see Cogent in any traces.

I still don't understand why they could offer the dcjn bandwidth at a cheaper rate than actual NAC bandwidth as I don't see much differences.
