    Packet Loss due to firewall?

    Hello,

I did a test here on watchmouse.com/en/ping.php to ping a site... This tool gives 50-80% packetloss from every location it pings from.

My host says it's because of the firewall, and the packetloss was almost 0% when the firewall was turned off...
But What does this mean, is it something to worry about? Does it have consequences for visitors?

What kind of firewall is it? We've seen in the past some "bad" versions of code for Cisco ASA's where they will just start having packet loss issues after xxx amount of uptime. It could also very well be that your host needs to hard code (speed/duplex) the firewall's interfaces to match the upstream switch and/or your server.

ICMP packets are mostly unimportant and are at the bottom of the food chain. So priority wise they don't get ahead in the queue. Also are your ping tests excessive? Some firewalls have a limit on ICMP packets/second.

If ICMP is even allowed. I know by defailt, I disallow ICMP on secure networks.
