Is there a site where I can compare web hosts by speed?

Good question! The only place I know off hand would be http://www.webhostingstuff.com I'm not sure how helpful that will be to you. Best of luck!

What kind of speed are you referring to?

    HTTP responsiveness or just bandwidth?

You can use http://www.watchmouse.com/en/checkit.php to get a general idea about the speed of the hosts network & page load times, as well as http://just-ping.com/ to test latency.

    Cool

Depends on what speed you are talking about. We host one of those"speed test" things on an average site but it will just show how fast your personal provider is giving you. Pings and traces will show other info about a host; the more hops slow things down if there's a slow one in the mix (but make sure those hops aren't your provider. Of course the server you are pinging is not mevessarily the one you will be on with a large host. We move ours so it's on the current "open" server but with a host with 20 servers they would naturally put a speed test on the fastest, might not be the one you are put on.
Basically you can only test as fast as your connection speed. I have one client with fiber optic-he sent me his speed test screen and being on DSL I am VERY jealous-I can't get fiber and compared to the fastest DSL I can get; he's 2 1/2 times faster on MY system

What type of website do you plan on hosting? Where are you located? These are all factors.

I would guess to get the fastest response from a ping would be a host that is located as close as possible to you. In any case you are only talking in terms of milliseconds.

In my honest opinion, speed and response time isn't much of a factor when it comes to shared hosting. You could be from the U.S. and will still have great load times on a website that's hosted in Europe or even Asia.

Great site for comparing speeds around the world:

    http://www.traceroute.org/

Take a look at the "Looking Glass" section, as it allows you to test IP's from different servers throughout the planet.

What type of "speed" are you after? Low latency? High transfer rates (200kb/sec, 800kb/sec, 1200kb/sec, etc...)?

Generally most shared hosts will offer around the same amount of performance in the same price-range.

you can ping the host's website (assuming they use the same server as their client accounts) or just ask them for a test ip or test download file.

but ping and download speeds do differ depending on the distance from the server - but speed is a broad category, gotta narrow it down, otherwise you'll just keep getting guesses like the above posts (including mine)

Ping and traceroute are virtually useless tools for comparing hosts. Those are troubleshooting tools, not performance evaluation tools. A difference of a few milliseconds for response times or latency is trivial. Morever, there are a lot of factors that the host has no control over that affect latency. Do not go with a host that denies this simple networking fact.

A better indicator is uptime and outage frequency. To that end check out these lists:

Given that it is laden with affiliate links, that site looks a little..how do I say this... suspect.

How does that compare web hosts based on speed or uptime? It shows a listing of web hosts based on how much they bid on the spot. It has nothing to do with their reviews/rating or uptime.

Furthermore, you make a point to mention how uptime is more important however you link to a site where some of the "top hosts'" uptime is 99.7%.

Did you ever look at the pages before you linked them?

    I'm confused.

Back to the original point, the best way (IMO) to judge delivery speed is to ask the host for a downloadable test file (25 or 50mb should do the trick) on the server your site would be hosted on. Most reputable hosts should have no problem doing this if they really want your business. I would beware of any host who links you a test file that is hosted at their actual domain (like www.myhost.com/testfile.zip or whatever) as that may, or may not, be indicative of the actual d/l speeds you will receive on one of their production servers.

Just make sure to ask for a file on a production server (preferably the one you would be placed on if you were to order at that moment).

I am not surprised. You are the one not looking. Here is a link that sorts the list by uptime. The page you are reading is sorted by number of monitored sites (these are added by hosting customers)

This is a quite good directory, but when it comes to network reliability, connectiviry and various related metrics tools you might check hostingspeeds dot com, vertain dot com, etc
