Question recommendations for a small business web designer?

hi, my name is salamandir. i'm a disabled small business entrepreneur, musician, artist and indophile. one of my small businesses is hosting web sites for other freaky folk, like the Cirque De Flambe - cirquedeflambe dot com - and the Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band - sedentarysousa dot com

however, i've had a very hard time finding a host provider that doesn't want to rip me off or take advantage of me in some way.

the first one was really expensive for not very much web space, and their tech support was non-existent, so i asked some of my geek-friends for recommendations, which lead me to the 2nd one.

their tech support was ideal, but it turned out that they bait-and-switched me into a contract that i never signed up for, and when all was said and done, they lasted only 6 months.

then came the third one, which is my current host provider, which looked like it was going to solve all my problems, but their tech support is marginal, their uptime is miserable and when i complain about it, i get IP blocked by their tech support site.

i'm sure there are some host providers that have excellent tech support and don't want to jerk me around... anybody have any suggestions?

Do you have a budget? Do you know how much disk space or bandwidth you will need? If you're looking for shared hosting, I'm sure many of the hosts you find here will suit your needs fine.

if a host is legit they would never try to rip you off - that's very unethical and outright wrong. You should try to get all of your work copyrighted and if a host does anything to compromise your work and privacy, just sue them and get compensation. But this wouldn't be the case 99.9% of the time, the other 0.1%, you'll have kids running the host and they see a good design, and they decide to take it for themselves.

as for finding a new hosting provider, take a look at the offers section and ask around. WHT is pretty strict when it comes to hosts advertising so you are less likely to run into hosts that will just run off without warning soon. And searching for reviews around the board helps as well.

    Good luck.

budget is something below $200 a year, currently i have a 50g web space, but i'm currently using less than 1g of it, and my bandwidth usage is minimal... i could do with whatever is offered.

i do host a "blasphemous" web site, however, at <<snipped>> dot org, and that has been a sticking point with a bunch of host providers that i've talked to...

You should be able to find a pretty decent provider that will be able to offer you enough resources to expand with that budget. In most cases, no shared hosting provider would really let you use up 50GB of disk space unless you're paying for dedicated resources. You could give HostVoice.com a try, it's a useful tool operated by iNet where you can receive multiple free quotes based on your submitted criteria.

see, it's so blasphemous that it gets snipped even when it is mentioned (but not linked) here...

i don't know why, because it is really pretty tame compared to some of the stuff i've seen out there. the "adult images" which got it snipped - of which there are two or three, total - are all photomanipulated in some way or another, and don't even represent reality...

Are you looking for a reseller plan so you can offer clients separate control panels? Or will you just be hosting the domains all under one account?

Since you're only using 1GB space and have a budget of $200/year you shouldn't have to look too far to find a quality web host who will take care of you . Sounds like you've just had a bit of bad luck, which is unfortunate to hear.

Do you have any other specific requirements?

@mike: so do i, which is why i host them... you wouldn't believe the difficulty they had before i came around...

@elief: currently, my customers wouldn't know what to do with a control panel if they saw one, but eventually it would be nice to offer them for people that can handle it...

i have a maximum budget of $200/year. i'm currently paying around $100/year and i'd like to keep it around there as much as i can.

Ah ok, that breaks down to a little over $8/month paid annually, which still is a pretty decent budget to work with for only using around 1GB space(I assume you plan for this to grow as well).

Do you, personally, have any control panel preference? e.g. Cpanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, etc. As well as any location preference? Number of domains?

This should help narrow your choices down a bit more, you can even look over the offers section on this forum to short-list a few hosts that peak your interest, and then do a search for reviews on them.

Found it via google. It's no secret that this place is run by fundies. I've seen mods whine because someone said something like "oh my god" in a thread title once (the mod posted something like "let's not bring god into this!" in the thread). Not that I care about what people choose to believe, but editing and removing posts based on personal beliefs is incredibly unprofessional.

Good luck on your search for a new host!

@elief: yes, i plan on growing, but i don't have any plans or expectations at this point. i do have a preference for cPanel. i'm located in western washington and would like to keep it as local as possible, but i'm willing to locate anywhere that'll get the job done. currently i host my own domain - hybridelephant - with the top 3 TLDs, and seven others.

@ohioguru: because of the fact that it's not in a "regular" dictionary,(i didn't know "indophile" wasn't really a word... i've been using it for 30 years, at least), and because of the fact that i'm not sure in what what tense was your comment, here is the definition, which, hopefully, will be satisfying to you:

"Indophile - An Indophile is a person who is usually not of Indian origin and who loves India. He has more than a passing interest in things Indian, such as India's culture, cuisine, art, languages, literature, religions, history and the people of India."

is that really a picture of you in your profile? i know a whole bunch of people like that...

Yes, List everything you want in a Hosting company

    • Control Panel (cpanel,Plesk,DirectAdmin)
    • Space You want (eg. 1-2 gigs)
    • Bandwidth(5gigs, or 30gigs)
    • Price(per year or Month)
    • Do you need extras like FFMEG?
    • Do you need a Dedicated Ip?
    • Do you need special scripts or languages (curl ect)?

This should help you alot if you can answer those questions

control panel preference is for cPanel.

    1g - 2g is fine. no less than 1g.

5g bandwidth is probably okay, as long as you don't cancel my account for going over.

$100/year is what i'm paying now. $200/year is as high as i can afford, but i'm a lot more likely to go with whatever can get me going for less.

i don't even know what FFMEG is, but then PCMCIA (People Can't Memorise Computer Industry Acronyms) anyway.

i do not need a dedicated IP, but if $100/year will get me one i won't complain.

i need to be able to run osCommerce and Wordpress, and i have some standard .cgi and .pl scripts, so i need a cgi-interpreter, PHP and perl.

You should not have any problems finding a host to meet those requirements at your budget. Purchase a plan that meets your resource needs instead of paying more for plans that promise outrageous resources (which the host won't be able to offer you anyway). A basic shared package should suit you fine.
