IMHO, I think your domain name extension provides you with greater validity if it is .com, .tv or .me rather than let's say the cheap and spammy .info for instance. I would much rather have a .com, .tv or .me over a .net, .org or .im for example or any of the other unique TLDs
Actually gents, different TLD's do matter to search engines, not in the purpose of content, but the purpose of a DMA or Country. A .im extension represents the Isle of Man outside the UK. So in fact if you are doing a search at say, google.im you are more than likely to have a relevant site come up first with a tld of .im, than anything else.
I have done the research and this does hold true, but unfortunately there are very few websites in that country, so you still get a lot of .com and .net results, and especially .co.uk results in the adwords area.
