    webmin corrupted

Hi guys. For some reason webmin stopped working. Some time ago I installed it and had to edit some firewall rules as it was blocking me and did not allow me to access via web to the CP. I checked if it was running and it was ( via console). I am with centos latest version. Apart from this I had been diving into plausible errors and got this:

    [11/Jul/2009:01:20:05 +0100] Reloading configuration

which distro of Linux are you running there?
i would try to remove the webmin package from the package manager.
update the system to the latest versions and then re install webmin - that should work for you.

    not talking about GUI,

depends on your distro - the most common packge managers are:

    emerge / apt / yum / yast

    Here is the fix.
    cd /dev/
    ./MAKEDEV generic
    Now try starting SSH.

could you explain the causes of such errors that the OP got?
is it a webmin related issue?

No, it's not a webmin issue, it's a random seeder issue, which ssh requires when it starts up. It can become corrupt, and the command just rebuilds it.

I wanted to know actually if webmin is a direct cause for such issues, as i never seen sshd break in such a way

No, Webmin would never do anything to the random number generator or its devices on your system.

It's semi-common with CentOS on OpenVZ, there is a known /dev corruption issue that sometimes happens, many OpenVZ providers have special scripts just for this fix, and even HyperVM had/has a "fix CentOS dev" function in it.

Sorry, I thought you had said it was fixed.

What distro are you running? This is usually caused by a corrupt /dev/urandom / random.
Have you tried rebooting? If they are missing, they will be rebuild upon boot up.

Do you have a hypervisor for your VPS? If so, which one are you using? is your VPS OpenVZ based?

Try pumping this into the command line to rebuild your random -

    mknod /dev/random c 1 8

    # mknod /dev/random c 1 8
    mknod: `/dev/random': File exists

It's most likely corrupt, especially if this is CentOS on OpenVZ. Delete your /dev/random and run the mknod again to recreate.
I have successfully fixed a similar issue a few times using this method.
If that fails, your host can run a command to unzip a new /dev onto your vps (if this is OpenVZ, I suspect it is as this is a common problem).

If you on the off chance happen to be using HyperVM, there is a "fix dev" option within it. That's how common the problem is.

Actually, it was a vaserv VPS I have fixed this way (I have a few through them).
You don't have HyperVM, they are just now rolling out beta control panels.
If you dump your /dev/random and regenerate with the command given, you should be good to go.
you are almost certainly on OpenVZ.

Yes, that's what you want to do, be careful with that -r recursive though!

    just a

    rm /dev/random

    then

    mknod /dev/random c 1 8

I forgot if you have to reboot afterwards...if sshd won't start, go for a reboot, it should be up after that.

If that fails, just submit a ticket to vaserv support to do a /dev fix. They will know exactly what you are talking about.

Definately. Just do a ticket and ask them to do a CentOS /dev fix for you.
It just consists of untaring a new /dev into your VPS.

You should be good to go then.
