    customize cpanel

    We would like to add a section to our cpanel with custom icons and links for stuff like google advertising credits. How and where do we do this? See example.

    The easiest way to start this is to use the cPanel Plugins generator at: http://cpanel.net/developer/overview.html

    You can add a quick Javascript to the onClick event to set location.href to be whatever web page you want the user to go to when they click on that icon.

    Until we add official support for adding new groups, doing the custom groups requires modifying files via SSH as root. I recommend editing all files on your server via SSH so you don't run into newline character issues when transferring between *nix and Windows systems.

    First, using a text editor, open the .cpanelplugin file that was generated. Change the line beginning with group: to have a name of a group after it that contains only numbers and letters (no spaces) - for example: group:Games. This will allow you to create many different groups rather than have all your icons in 1 custom group.

    Remember the name of the group, it's important for the next step.

    Open /usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/x3/dyanmicui.conf in a text editor. I created a group called "Games" for my custom plugin so I added this line to dynamiui.conf:

    Code:
    description=>Games,file=>group_Games,group=>Games,groupdesc=>Games,grouporder=>1,imgtype=>icon,subtype=>img,height=>32,type=>image,width=>32
    Just substitute Games with the name of your group for each occurrence in that line. Actually, you can change the groupdesc to whatever you want it to be, including spaces etc.

    This will get you started. However, at this time, cPanel will not remember where you dragged/dropped a custom group. This will likely change once we introduce official support for custom groups. In the meantime, the grouporder item in the line you added to dynamicui.conf will determine where the group will appear whenever anyone comes back to the homepage of the cPanel interface.

    To followup, dynamicui.conf does get overwritten with some cPanel updates, so if you go this route, be sure to back it up by creating a shell script /scripts/preupcp and having a shell script /scripts/postupcp restore your backup.
