$100/month for 4GB memory -- is that reasonable?

    Hi there,

What do you guys think about a data center charging $100/month to add 4GB extra memory to a dedicated server offer -- is that reasonable?

  2. #2
Way to high. Average is around $20-40 per month.

What kind of server and memory are we talking about? Some memory is more expensive than others. $100 seems steep at first glance but to see how steep we need to know what type.

That should be a one time setup fee and not be added to your monthly payment

I do find it expensive but check out softlayer.com

Is your server colocated or leased with the datacenter?

Do you know they have a special on RAM where they double it? Its always there, so thats not actually the price. You would pay half of that. If you have a server currently just open a sale Ticket and they will apply the promo.

Also, Softlayer uses TOP quality hardware. That goes for RAM as well.

Yes usually $20 gb for 1 gb ram. But there are many dcs that give 8gb ram for less than $100

imo way to expensive. But then again, there are some providers that target the higher level businesses. (ie the businesses that pay more).

The web hosting market has started to become very saturated, so prices are very cheap just to compete with others.

RAM is always overpriced when you go dedicated. For $100/m for 4GB of RAM, they will probably make a profit off you before your 2nd month is even over. I mean I understand it - they are trying to make more money off the customer, which is acceptable. Just some data centers overdue it, almost to the point where you cant upgrade your stuff when you need it.

It depends on what kind of memory is it. AFAIK, SoftLayer does charge $25/GB, but that's ECC RAM, not cheap desktop RAM. They do have a "YIPP" coupon code which you will get about $12.50/GB eventually.

    You can a Q9550 w/ 8GB ram and a 1TB hard disk, with un-metered bandwidth on a 100Mb port for $225 a month.

So yea, $100/mo just for 4GB of memory is a bit expensive.

Whats the purpose of posting without reading the topic?
2 persons now including me said thats not the price since you can use the discount code YIPP.

You should not guide you by that. It depends on the server probably as some don't support DDR3 for example. Memory is ECC and you will get exact details of each hardware price in their control panel.

DDR RAM is a bit more expensive than DDR2 and DDR3, especially when using larger DIMM sizes.

DDR ram is old, and too expensive.
DDR2 ram is newer, and cheaper.
DDR3 ram is newest, and expensive.

ECC Ram is server grade ram and expensive.

This topic has been brought up many times before and as unreasonable the price may seem, you have to bare in mind the benefits to the client + costs to the supplier to provide this service.
for example, a supplier would need to take into account:
support, warranty, storage, power and insurance costs + depreciation etc.

This soon tallies up and it's never as simple as buying RAM and sticking it into the server.
RAM fluctuates and a supplier can never guarantee themselves if the price they bought today is the price they will pay tomorrow.
Unlike other hardware where prices drop RAM prices can and have increased.

Thats business but i hate it.

They can ask $35-$40 per month for additional 4gb ram. Otherwise, They may ask ONETIME Setup cost for additional RAM.
